Hi, folks: Among many excellent firewall applications out here, are there some good enough to protect data transmission while using public hotspots?

I would have thought any good software firewall is about as good as it gets, but I could be woefully wrong, the software firewall protects ur computer, if ur using secure site, encryption between site and ur computer protects the data in transit, outside of that I would have thought anything else was outside ur control.

Here's what MSFT say about (Ok so it's msft, not the best source of info on security, but it's a start)

and a non msft one.

VPN. Create a VPN at home, or if you have a VPN at the office..use that. Now all your traffic is encrypted through the tunnel...so zit popping wannabe kiddie hacker sitting at the local coffee shop you're using the open wireless at..won't be able to sniff you.

If you don't have a VPN at home or the workplace to utilize..there are MANY ones out there that you can subscribe to inexpensively..Google them. http://anchorfree.com/ is a popular one, there are many others.

HI YeOldeStonecat, I presume you would require a static IP address for that.

Nope...they work just fine with dynamic dns services also. Can even use easy kits such as Hamachi.

Thanx, that's interesting to know, not that I use hotspots much, but still, like to know these things.
