new computer, always used nod32 and zonealarm, will continue nod32, but wanted a lighter firewall.
Anyone know how I can get Phantoms most recent rule set? v7? I can not register at his site, denied me numerous times, despite not entering personal info as suggested, then message I tried to many times. Most frustating attempt registration ever.
isearched here but could not find. Or is enhanced ruleset as good?
anyone know which is lighter jetico or lns, though will probably test both myself.

Don't know.

Yes, sure.
You begin with LnS: keep things simple...

LnS is lighter... ;)
You're on the Official LnS forum: did you expect an other answer here? ;)

thanks, quick reply. I just tried jetico 2, trial version I downloaded said it already expired??? startup was fast, hung my shutdown three times I tried, not to mention the 20 popups or so. Wont be interested in trying anything from jetico again. had to wade through 10 popups just to uninstall it.
Know where I can get enhanced rule set for lns? or does it come with lns.

It comes with LnS; located in the LnS program folder.

You should be able to download Phant0m``s rule set by clicking the " Download: HERE" link from his main site (in the Phant0m`` Look 'n' Stop Ruleset v7 section)
http://www.mntolympus.org/
To register it, you'll need to click the button that's written "purchase" or some such name (I forget offhand) after which you'll be e-mailed a serial number.
As to why you can't register on the forum, make sure you have cookies enabled in your browser. If you're using Firefox, add [B]mntolympus.org to the exceptions list in the Cookies section (assuming you have cookies disabled in the settings, as I do). I've never had a problem downloading or registering at Phant0m``s site. I don't think that's the problem.
Good luck.

Thanks, that download worked. I have cookies enabled (3rd party disabled), but maybe some setting I have is preventing registering, but as long as I dont have to try again...;D
I actually like the enhanced ruleset, been tinkering with it and reading, trying to learn. Have to see which I like better now, after I learn a little more.

another option would be climenole's set if you don't know it already.

i like this best because of the completeness and clear labeling.

Hi Phant0m :)
Some users have problems to register the your forum.
This user is a least the second this week...
May be a warning message or a short instruction about "how to register" will help.
Have a nice day!
:)

Yes, that was the latest i've seen. I'm sure version 7 great, but when i wanted to try it i remember there was an issue with the installer that something wasn't recognized, so i kept on using version 6 since it wasn't so important to me and then climenole released his rules so i started using them. also i don't have paypal which led me to this decision.
but comparing version 6 and climenole's set i would have to say that version 6 isn't so newbie friendly. but i should have implied that i was referring to your older ruleset.
greetings,
Phant0m

Be honest, the only real issue you experienced was the registration required, nothing at all about not recognising something. About PayPal; time ago, and may still be, don't know, but it didn't require an user to have / create an PayPal account.
As for v6, no it's not very user-friendly, considering some important rules were disabled and required firstly to be configured and activated, and this is where the Online guide that use to be hosted for this came into play. As for not having clear labelling, you referring to the rules descriptions? Used links at the time, which is now of course dead-links... In any case v6 Final release dates way-back to 2003, so I wouldn't recommend anyone to be using v6 now.

To be perfectly honest I was really pissed off when Phantom started charging for version 7 of his ruleset, or rather the version that he released. If a product is freeware that usually meant that the developer(s) is passionate about what he does. Then when they start charging for their software they tend to loose that; look at Jetico, or JV16 But I can say with some certainty that is not the case here. He does answer your questions, although he refuses to admit when he has been bested ;D . In my opinion, therer is no better rulset for LnS than Phantom's. Quality costs. There are even more exciting things in the future.

it's a ruleset for a firewall
no reason for it to change that much in its base...
the year it was made doesn't really matter
and i most certainly won't pay for a ruleset :)

yea also find it quite a pity, the charge for v7 of phantom's ruleset.
SHOULD BE FREEWARE!!! (freeware will last)

I respect your opinion on that issue but Phant0m is working on this rules set since a long time and the new version comes with an automatic installation / configuration.
So it's not only a rules set. The price is very reasonable for this and since Phant0m is the author and creator of these rules + the installator he have the right to ask few $ for this including the forum where you can find help for the rules set...
Freewares like the Sysinternals tools or Free Open Source softwares like Firefox are free for us because somebody else pay for it: Winternals was financing Sysinternals and the Mozilla Foundation received money from various manufacturer and companies to pay the programmmers ...
Skilled poeple like Phant0m have the right to earn some money for their works. Not only Bill Gates or Steve Jobs...
Finally this is not the only rules set available and you still have the possibility to create your own rules set to fit to your needs.
Best regards,
:)

Does paying for the latest Phantom ruleset include future releases ?
found the answer in an older thread http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showpost.php?p=716612&postcount=8
