hi my red security centre shows up in taskbar saying i have no antivirus when i do? this only happened after i unistalled one of the others arghhhhhhh how do i get it to recognise i do have one?? tx MD

Here is what worked for me with XP home.

In control panel click on Administrative Tools, then Services, from the list of services find Windows Management Instrumentation right click mouse and from dropdown list stop the service.

Find folder C:\windows\system32\wbem, inside this folder identify the repository folder and delete ONLY this folder (the repository folder) from your computer.

In Administrative Tools find Windows Management Instrumentation service again, and re-start the service by right clicking mouse and pressing start from dropdown list. Restarting this service re-builds the repository folder database on your computer, which should now only contain information about your currently installed antivirus & firewall programs.

To reset the Windows Security Centre you must re-boot your computer.

When I tried this it wouldn't let me delete because it was dependent on a svchost.exe process.

I had more than one svchost.exe running so used http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.mspx to identify which one - the relevant PID.


turn on viewing PID in task manager, stop the right svchost.exe and then you can delete as per innerpeace's instructions.

The problem I had was that my security centre would not recognise the Avira firewall. This didn't work, unfortunately.

You may need to reregister WMI http://www.microforge.net/kb/102 or http://windowsxp.mvps.org/repairwmi.htm.

I didn't get around to trying this as I went back to F-secure.

Re-registering and recompiling WMI providers
You can reregister and recompile all of the WMI providers on a particular machine by issuing the following statements from the command prompt in windows:

c:
cd %windir%\system32\wbem\
for %i in (*.dll) do RegSvr32 /s %i
for %i in (*.mof, *.mfl) do Mofcomp %i

I simply disabled the security center service. Its a waste of resource for me.

It's listed as Security Center.

You can also disable it with XP AntiSpy.

I agree WSC for most people who visit here is useless. I have had it disabled since it came out!
