Hi all,
Some time ago, I purchased Disk Director. This purchase was on top of Privacy Expert and True Image. The last two mentioned are far from what I expected.
I picked up the courage to try Disk Director: I wanted to create a partition from an existing 153 Gb Primary partition. I selected the appropriate menu and a box duly appeared. The box was fixed in size. All information contained in the box was far too crammed to read, and the slider which guages the amount of free space to use for the partition would not move and so I abandonded that mode (Automatic) and selected "manual" - lo and behold, the same problems applied - what on earth is the matter with Acronis's products - can anyone suggest a remedy short of blowing Acronis away?

What build of DD are you using? 2,160 is the latest.

Are you trying to resize the 153GB partition smaller to make room for another partition?

How much free space is on the 153GB partition?

Can you post a screen shot of the DD screen where you're having the problem?

Are you trying to do the resize from Windows or are you booting from the DD cd? If the cd, are you using the Full mode or the Safe mode?

What OS are you using? XP, Vista, etc.

Hi MudCrab,
Thanks for your reply.
I am using build 2160 on Windows XP Professional. I am in possession of a download - no CD.

I have just two modes: automatic and manual. Of the 153 Gb there exists 152Gb. This is because I am starting again. The complete disc is formatted NTFS and is Primary. I did have 3 partitions and used Partition Magic. PM just cannot compete: hence I am trying Disk Director.

I haven't a clue how to capture a screen shot.

Download Screenhunter freeware. Very easy to use. http://www.wisdom-soft.com/products/screenhunter_free.htm

Or follow these instructions. http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=63957

Hi Ronjor,

What appears easy to operate for you, is extremely difficult for me. I had a look at your suggestion and duly uninstalled.

MudCrab,
In starting Disk Director, I had made certain inputs until I hit the non movable box. Basically, I was blind to what I was doing and accepted what DD wanted to do. C: is now 5.5 Gb and D: is a Logical 147 Gb. First, I will download another copy of DD to see if that is different. I don't think 5Gb of hard drive is sufficient for what I want. I have a copy of my OS by TI10 - so I have some work on here.

Use the Acronis Media Builder program (installed with DD) to create a bootable CD.

I assume XP is installed in the approx. 1GB that's used on the 153GB drive?

Have you run chkdsk /f on the drive?
DD won't do anything if it detects any errors (and it won't tell you the errors exist).

Hi MudCrab

After I have downloaded another copy (doing that now) I will then do as you suggest.

Hi MudCrab

I downloaded another copy of DD. After installation, I ran the Application. Whilst in Windows, the problem of the cramped boxes was still evident. I then created the Media Disc, as you suggested.
In the full mode I received this message; " Loading, please wait. Kernel panic: UFS or VFS unable to mount root fs on 01.00. I then tried Safe Mode, and everything went so smoothly. In this, I thank you so much. Does this mean that it is advisable to always use the disc and not the Windows interface?

Thanks again, MudCrab

It should work in the Windows interface, but if you're changing things on the Windows partition, then it has to reboot into the Full mode (Linux mode) to make the changes. This doesn't work on your computer so I would suggest using the Safe mode from the cd.

I still don't understand exactly what you mean by cramped boxes. Can you post a screen shot of this? Are you running DD in a small window or at a low resolution? Is it better maximized?

Hi MudCrab,

I have the "Screencapture" on my desktop. How do I get this into this Post?

If you're just using standard Windows to do the screen capture, then follow the 2nd link instructions ronjor posted in post #4.

Hi MudCrab

Hope this works

What resolution are you running your screen at?
640x480, 800x600, etc.

Also it looks like you are using the "large" font set (or custom fonts) instead of the Windows default. That can cause problems sometimes with things not displaying correctly.

This is a screenshot of mine (in the Advanced Mode) at 1024x768.

Hi MudCrab

This is the Box that is of concern: there is only a slider and no box to place a value!

With LARGE fonts, apparently...

Are you trying to create a partition from unallocated space?
If so, I don't see any in your picture.

I assume you are taking space from an existing partition.

This is what the Partition screen should look like:

Hi MudCrab

You were absolutely correct on everything. I have caused myself (ignorance) a lot of problems. I did have large fonts and the wrong resolution. I am now using your resolution and everything is perfect.

Thank you for your time and expertise, MudCrab.

PS a stange name (MudCrab) for an obviously well-informed person.

(I took the space from the existing partition)

You're welcome. I glad you got it straightened out.

There's nothing wrong with running the fonts and resolution as needed, just be aware that some programs won't display properly if things are too far from standard. If that happens, set things back to normal and then change it back to how you like it afterwards.
