Hello,

The last thread was too old to reply to, so I must start a new post.

I have updated the Kubuntu guide with a number of changes and improvements, similar to what I did with the SUSE tutorial.

Here's the list of changes added:

- Added explanation regarding article's validity over time
- Added comparison between KDE and GNOME environments
- Added mini table of contents with links to major chapters in the article
- Added sub-titles for major chapters in the article
- Added command to backup xorg before installation of graphic card drivers
- Added envy script as option for installation of graphic card drivers
- Added links to Edgy and Feisty Starter Guides
- Added links to psychocats.net and Kubuntu Desktop Guide
- Added links to some of my other Linux articles (including Linux command line tutorial)
- Added chapter about transition from Windows to Linux, with tips about codecs, java and flash
- Added chapter about most common KDE applications, with brief introduction to the most popular ones

- Fixed minor spelling mistakes
- Fixed minor phrasing and semantics errors

Here's the step-by-step tutorial:

For those who do not recall the last thread, this article is a step-by-step guide for installation of Kubuntu Linux, including partitioning, basic setup, installation of drivers, updating system, and more.

I hope this helps. Enjoy!

Nice job. Those new to linux need a tutorial to walk them through processes that many linux users consider "common knowledge". I found that installing Ubuntu as your only OS, using the automatic install, is simple, quick and painless. It is the manual partitioning where I run into problems. Tried to dual boot Ubuntu and PCLinusOS and always run into trouble with the bootloader.

Hello,

Thanks for the feedback.
BTW, I have the dual boot guide, too.

Very well done, Mrk.

When I install linux, I prefer to resize the Windows partitions first and leave empty space. Then when I boot from the distro CD, I select 'use empty space' and let the installation handle swap and other partitions. :thumb:

Also, in the (K)Ubuntu tutorial you mention ease for Windows users. I want to add to that that I looked at Xandros 4 (http://www.xandros.com/) and I was amazed how well this distro integrates into an existing Windows network.
All the Windows shares/printers were clickable without any configuration required.
Xandros is KDE oriented.

hee, yes Mrk, you have made me real lazy with friends as I too have given them this link 'this good site'...dedoimedo.com.
It is not only the content though, I like the way you put things down.

Hello,
Thank you guys and girls for the feedback. I appreciate it.
As to how I put things down - I put them down as I'd like to see them put down for me. I'm anal, so going step by step is the best way...
Cheers,
Mrk

Gee, I wonder why:

Xandros doesn't have a free version either :thumbd:
Kinda defeats the Linux philosophy.
