View Full Version : Repellent antivirus. Too good to be true?

I heard about this on another forum and checked the data on the above page. It sounds a little too good to be true and wonder if anyone has any experience with it. I haven't downloaded it to try because apparently you've got to disable your regular antivirus to use it, if I read the info right. I don't want to be surfing without an AV.

Anybody know anything about it?

From the description alone I would say this is a program like ScriptSentry or WormGuard and not an antivirus.

{QUOTE-> Of course, you should never open a file attachment that your receive from anyone unless you are expecting the file. A virus inside of an executable (.exe) file is not a script virus so you need to scan these attachements before running them. <-QUOTE}

I didn't see the part where it tells you to disable your antivirus, but this is pretty much dumb if it tells you that, if all it does is disable scripts.

All it does is disable scripts. It also only works with IE & OE according to the readme in the zip file.

{QUOTE-> Repellent disables VB Script, Java Script, Registry files, and Applets in the Registry and in the Internet Setting. Renames the files that the script need to run. This ensures that an asp page cannot enable scripting. The best why to kill a virus or worm is to prevent getting it, Repellent prevents.

This software is designed for use with Microsoft Internet Explorer, Outlook, and Outlook Express. It will also work on other browsers and email programs that are SKINS or use the Microsoft componets and configuration, such as AOL and many others. <-QUOTE}

I tried it.

I haven't had the use of Windows Media Player since.

Wrote them about it and they said their program couldn't have caused it. (It was the only new program I fooled with the day WMP went belly-up).

Un-installing Repel didn't help. Un-installing/re-installing WMP didn't help. Re-installing Repel and playing with its' settings didn't help.

I don't believe in co-incidence. Pete

After hours of testing and research, my considered opinion is this.

DO NOT USE IT!

I do..

If you install internet explorer 6 service pack 1 it will cure the wmp9 fault and also give you the java stuff back, fixes the windows search problem and the java stuff! You can get this from the microsoft website and if you have IE6 already it will only require a small download.

downloaded the script 5.6 for windows xp:

Yeah, but I meant, using one of the above, not all together at once...
