Stardard Menu:

When a new installation is made, the default menu is the "New Menu". If you go the advanced menu > user interface you will find that the option use standard menu is checked when it shouldn't be.
Therefore, when you click apply, ESS applies the standard menu even if you still wanted the "New Menu".
Note that this problem only happens once because, when ESS wrongly reverts to the standard menu the option use standard menu will now be correctly checked.
Solution: use standard menu option should start as unchecked.
