View Full Version : Problems restoring Linux-ext3 partition with TI10 home

I recently downloaded the latest build of TI10 (evaluation version) to see if TI10 could replace my old Norton Ghost 9 because I want to start making incremental partitions of my Windows-XP Partition.

As I am also using Linux (Xandros) installed on an ext3 partition with the bootloader on this partition only I also tried a backup/restore if this partition.

Unfortunately when restoring the ext3 partition apparently TI10 does not restore the boot-loader code in this partition and I have to recover the LILO bootloader from the Xandros installation CD.

When doing a backup/restore of this partition with Ghost 9 the Linux partition starts up normally.

Is this a know bug or missing functionality in TI10??
Any ideas are welcome.

FYI: I use OS-Selector to start my WinXP or Linux partition..

This is a common problem (not sure if it qualifies as a bug) with restoring linux bootable partitions. TI has the same problem with GRUB. Since TI does not restore everything to the exact same sectors, these programs can't find the file(s) they're looking for and require a repair to work again.

The easiest way to avoid this is to use a small separate partition as the /boot mount and install LILO/GRUB there. That way you can backup your main linux partition are restore it without bothering the bootloader files. You can, of course, include the boot partition in your backup so you have that too, just realize that if you need to restore it you'll need to repair LILO/GRUB afterwards.

Thanks for your reply.

A separate partition for the boot manager was one of the things I was thinking off. But I don't understand that Acronis cannot get a simple restore/backup of an ext3 partition to work.

In the mean time I was busy reading this forum and I discovered enough posts as you said with people that have the same problems.

So in the meantime I also tested Ghost 12 and this works perfectly.

So unless Acronis gets things working I think TI10 is not my choice.
