Would recovering Windows Vista from within Windows XP on a Dual boot system work, and avoid messing up the bootloader or MBR? Had an issue with recovering. The bootloader Vista installed become unusable and had to re-install Windows XP, as well as Vista. Wish to avoid this again, and thought that it might be possible to recover only what is within the Vista partition and not affect any bootloader or Windows XP boot files by recovering from the other operating system. Seems any change to the bootloader, MBR, or boot files in Windows XP can be an impossible situation to fix.
Thank you.

I would think that restoring the Vista partition would break the link with the bootloader and require a repair, but I have always installed Vista in isolation from XP so they don't get intermingled.
If you haven't, you might take a look a this link as it details attempts to restore Vista partitions.

Thanks for the link. Was in need of restoring because of a problem with hauppauge drivers. Before your reply was given I decided to restore Vista from Windows XP. The image restore part worked but was unable to reboot. Had to access the MBR via a bootit boot CD and change the first two lines of the MBR. The Vista partition was written as first and the XP partition second. This may be bacause XP was part of the earlier failed attempt of a clean install of Vista on its own, and on a 2nd partition. It apparantly wrote the bootloader to the XP partition, which is now results in a conflict. Tried to fix it with BCDedit, but was not successful. This is a real bear because it's difficult to find exactly what went wrong earlier and fix that.
At least, with the modification of the MBR, it now boots fine and back in business.
There is a real need for Acronis True Image to do something to handle the bootloader and its problems.
Thanks,
John
