ubuntu released Feisty Fawn (the name for Ubuntu 7.04) a few days ago. i haven't used ubuntu for a year, or so, so i can't compare it to earlier versions. i did download the iso and tried it and it looks like it will work with all my hardware - one reason i stopped using it.

i was just running the livecd, but still it was still very fast. if you are new to linux i think it's perfect because they have made installing software very easy, that's one thing new linux users say they find difficult. ubuntu uses add/remove applications to add a remove stuff.

i tried running an mp3, then an wmv, they didn't play because alot of the media codecs aren't installed by default for legal reasons, if they were you'd probably have to pay for ubuntu and they aren't considered free either (as in freedom) so they are left out. but, a popup popped up and asked if i wanted to let it install the codecs needed, i clicked yes, it installed the codecs, then played the media.

i also, ran the partitioner (older ubuntu versions couldn't see my software RAID S-ATA setup, but this time it auto-mounted my drives and put icons for them on the desktop.

there was an option in the menu to install the nvidia driver too, i tried it and it installed perfectly. i didn't enable the 3D desktop effects of Beryl or Compiz though, but i think they are easily enabled.

here are some old alpha screenshots, they're abit old, but i don't think too much has changed -

here's some screenshots automatix2, a program that will install all the most popular things you might need and configure things too, just select what you want from a list and that's it.

here's a good review of the beta version that tells you alot of the things this version will do

Is it possible to give out fixed IP's on the LAN without any trouble or losing your internet connection?
I've tried the LiveCD and they still hadn't fix that, so i uninstalled network-manager and lost all connection, the stupid thing only wants to play with DHCP and i don't.
It could be different if you upgrade or install, but i'm a bit weary of that in view of this experience.

Greetings

Hi There
Bear with me. I'm a real novice.

I have downloaded Ubuntu and burnt it to disk. I have had a look at it on the CD and looks great.
If I install it on my hard drive on my computer will it give me an option which operating sytem to start at boot time? eg XP or Ubuntu

Thanks

Good deal. Glad to see that. My copy of Ubuntu was just collecting dust, now maybe this one can be put to some real use.

Thanks for the update

Ubuntu will install GRUB (the Grand Unified Bootloader) and this will give you the option to start XP or Ubuntu, you can make your choice at start-up.

You don't have to upgrade, you are using 6.06 LTS (Dapper), LTS stands for Long Term Support, so if you don't need the bleeding edge in software and want a stable system stay with Dapper.
Edgy Eft and now Feisty Fawn are development versions towards the next LTS version, that doesn't mean you can't use them or that they are instable, but if you want to play safe use Dapper.
