I have a new 160GB IDE drive that has twice now lost it's partitions. The first time I was able to recover booting from the CD. Now it has happened again, except this time it does not appear that recovery is possible. ADDS does not find ANY partitions on this drive.
This computer has WinXP has the main OS, with Vista and Suse installed. Since putting in this new drive, I have not loaded either Vista or Suse. Previously I had split the drive into 3 partitions.
Since the drive is new, I do not understand exactly what could be causing this? Virus or malware? The machine is pretty clean considering I do not really do much with it except for connecting to the servers at my office, usually either via webpage or SSH. No games, no downloading etc.. Never had a Virus, Symantec Corp 10.2 and spyware are up to date. Besides, most virus I am aware of usually under these circmustances try to mess with the OS. All this drive does is store backup images of VMWare machines.
Surface tests of the drive all indicate no errors. The only thing is this, the partitions were created with ADDS, and not Windows own Disk Management, but I fail to see where this could be the cause.
Any ideas on where I could begin to look at what the cause of this is?
Strange update: I tried twice booting with the ADDS CD and both times could NOT recover ANY lost partitions. I shut off the machine, and when I came back and loaded up Windows....the partitions were there. Why...? How...? I mean if Acronis can not even find them to recover...this is just weird. Could this be a issue with the controller?
