That is quite an offer. I saw that the Hard Disk Manager 8 sells for $79.95 on Paragon's site. This is Hard Disk Manager 8 Special Edition. So I am assuming they are pretty similar.
Thanks for the head's up! I am heading over to download right now.

@geraldwil,

Something like this always seem to happen when these vendors make a "free" offer. I dunno if it's just deja vu or they reconsider the offer but make it actually available on a predetermined time schedule to keep the server from getting overloaded.
PARAGON is been my favorite of choice for years now and the best investment of any program like that bar none. I found them much more user-friendly and stable compared to Acronis & Ghost which almost turned me off completely in this area before discovering then trying PARAGON.
If this rings true, you guys are in a for a nice treat that will offer you years of good and dependable use. They made a believer out of me. Latest Version user here. Heck i still have my old version 6 of Hard Disk Manager Pro that still works like a charm!

I'm trying to help you guys out by going thru the same steps but the download link is toast right now. If i cut down the link to the index of the FTP site i get in but presented with a password box. Well i registered like you guys and entered that info into the password box thinking maybe it would open the door but no doing. I guess they have it configured for the one file directly by a single full URL. I done that same jockying at the Microsoft ftp site once and got in to download some console tools. One question, will the recovery media builder enable me to make

Does one need to somewhere on Paragon's site obtain an iso image to
make a recovery CD ? With Acronis it's easy, the recovery CD can be
made by just clicking on rescue media builder.

In looking at Paragon Hard Drive Manager 8 and Paragon Drive Backup 8, they seem very similar. Both will image the drive and both have the same version number.
No problems with this but just curious. I cannot figure out why they would have two apparently identical products with different names. Am I reading something wrong in their opening pages?

i have a few problems.
one of them is the pc itself and not the program.
1. if i tell it to make a recovery cd and burn it to cd via my cd burner it wont let me press next it could be that it cant find any media in the drive.
i did try different blank cd's thou.
so i used the emulated drive and then browsed to program files/paragon and found an iso folder and it it was an emulation ISO so i used nero to burn it to cd and it works great.
2. i get a hot processing error if i tell it to make an image of both the master boot record and the C: partistion. it does the image fine but it cant do the third step which is combine the two archives in to one archive.
but i found out that the harddrive had bad sectors so i ran a chkdisk on all partisions and now windows wont write to the bad sectors. which is a good thing.
the image restored perfectly thou.more about this in number 3
3. ok so now the bad sectors are corrected i thought i would create a image hopefully with no errors this time.
ok this is the weird part, suddenly in the middle of it creating the image the pc froze and rebooted but showed a prompt saying put a valid boot cd in the A: drive.
so i checked the bios and no HD was found.
so i took the case side off and pushed the cable in.
then windows loaded right away. but it done the same thing when i tryed to create another image but further on.
so i changed the cable for the HD but it still does it.
this happerned when i first installed windows 2000 pro on it a few weeks ago.
so for some reason the bios cant find the HD so if installing an OS it gets stuck. or if using windows it freezes and reboots.
anyidea what to do to stop this problem?
i think the images will create successfully as long as the HD doesnt disapear;D
on the whole a very nice program that only has processes running while it does a backup and once finished it stops them.
so it can be totally on demand imaging program. a major plus if you ask me.

yes i do want a bootable iso image but i thought the typical option would burn a paragon bootable rescue cd.
the problem is that if i select my cd burner as the place to create the disc i can click next because it cant find any media in the drive.
so i got around it partly by creating it to the emulation burner and used nero to burn that ISO to cd.
but its just odd that paragon cant find any media in the drive.

ps. Did anyone try this SE version under Vista?

i prefer it over acronis as well.
it only uses one process called lancher.exe when creating images.
i might use this SE paragon on my main pc to replace acronis.
this way the images will be more reliable and the recovery cd works as well.
if you buy any paragon imaging product you can a winpe recovery cd for eiether $11 or $20 dollers.

ok i think this deserves a new reply.
it seems there is alot of talk about the cool shadow protect desktop IT editon that can backup a pc without any install.
well in this video they show you backing up to a external HD
but the most interesting thing is that you can run it from the cd with no install just like shadow protect desktop It edition but paragon Drive Backup 8.5
Personal Edition is only $50 and $11 for the winpe recovery Cd
it shows the 8.0 version but 8.5 is now out so the video is outdated but still good.

Since I use Paragon drive backup, I do restoration from the recovery CD and do restoration from Windows, it never failed on my system at all, never had any corrupt images. And for this Paragon Hard Disk Manager also never failed on this too. I play around with the partition, resize from outside and inside Windows, everything works beautifully. I find that this suite really worth to buy for the Pro version.

paragon drive backup 8.5 is normaly $50 and the winpe recovery cd is $11 so in total $61
so with discount i can get it including the recovery cd for around £15.
hope they ship to the UK.....

- It cannot convert dynamic disks back to basic;
- However, it can recognize the layout of dynamic disks.
The Personal edition does not provide support of the Microsoft VSS (Volume Shadow Copy Service) technology.
The Personal edition does not enable to make a synchronous snapshot of multiple volumes.
There are no Synthetic Backup Wizard and Wipe Wizard in the Personal edition.
Generate Script, Convert to Basic, Wipe Partition/Hard Disk, Clear Free Space, Change SID program’s dialogs are unavailable in the Personal edition.
There is no possibility to send notifications by e-mail on the carried out operations in the Personal edition.
Additional to the features supported by the Personal version of the Recovery CD, the Professional and Server versions provide the following advanced functionality:
- Ability to map network shares to place or retrieve backup images over LAN;
- Backup/Restore of dynamic volumes;
- UFSD LDM module to mount complex dynamic volumes (spanned, striped, mirrored and RAID-5). <-QUOTE}
It does not support VSS, but for online backups, it uses the "Paragon Hot Processing Technology". In Basic concepts-Paragon Hot Processing & Volume Shadow Copy Service:
{QUOTE-> Paragon Hot Processing is an online backup technology for Windows NT+ family operating systems. Developed back in 2001, nowadays it is integrated with all backup solutions offered by the company.
Paragon Hot Processing is not exactly a snapshot technology, though it has much in common with it. During an online backup, the program uses the kernel mode driver HOTCORE.SYS to intercept and control disk write activity of applications and the operating system. The hotcore driver as an integral part of the program is installed during the setup procedure (that’s why the system reboot is required to complete the setup procedure). For the most part the driver is in the idle mode until it is activated with the program. While in this mode it bypasses any calls having no effect on the overall system performance, but a few kilobytes of the system memory.
Paragon Hot Processing technology offers backup of locked partitions and hard disks under Windows NT+ family operating systems providing both high operating efficiency as well as low hardware requirements.
It is not recommended to use Paragon Hot Processing with active SQL Server 2003, Exchange 2003 or Oracle databases since the backup image Backup Image is an archive of the disk, which includes all the on-disk files and service information on the disk layout. To restore disks from such an archive means retrieving all informational components of the disk (e.g. a hard disk image consists of its partitions, the Partition Table and even bootstrap code). contents may be corrupted.
Unlike Microsoft VSS, the Paragon Hot Processing technology cannot be used for online backup of locked dynamic volumes. <-QUOTE}
It should be more than enough for me though! If i need more, Paragon will be on my 1st options, if i have no issues with it.

I ran the defragger and it did is job fine. However it won't defrag a disk which is in use, in that case you will be asked to restart your machine and then it will do this job.
You also can run Defrag from the Boot CD.

I quietly been a PARAGON advocate for years after TI & Norton's screwed up my pc and found it totally user-friendly and most effective of all. This comes as no surprise that others will soon discover PARAGON is an elite group of specialists who sharpen and honed their programs "FIRST!" before letting them out of the bag into the label box.
And who can forget the continuing echoes like a broken record of thank you for choosing Acronis products and all that nonsense instead of getting down deep in the trenches where it really counts when it comes to imaging issues and the like. Gee Whiz!

I tried the free HDM8, but bought the Drive Backup 8.51 Personal with a 50% upgrade discount for ATI10, and the $11 WinPE recovery disk. One thing it has is VSS support that is not included in the suite.
I submitted a support query for two problems:
1. Does not appear to support quotas to limit backup images.
2. Image is split into 2GB files ignoring the option setting.
I finally removed DriveImage 7 and am waiting for ShadowProtect 3.0.
'If you have two, you have one; If you have one, you have none!'
'Belts and Braces' is more succinct.

The help file is most instructive, i recommend reading it. Everything.
I read this "Data Sanitization", which supposedly wipes everything from a HD, even from "advanced forensic tools".
They describe it as better than erasing. I read that as implicit, it's not explicit in the text.
Reading it, makes me want to buy the whole package lol.

I tried it today. FF, IE, FlashGet, LeechGet all failed. I was able to download only with opera. My impresions are good so far. It has a nice GUI and is fast though compression is a bit less as compared to ATI( version7) on default setings.
Imaged my C partition 7.81 GB with 4.93 GB data. Image size was 2.53 GB with ATI while it is 3.4 GB with Paragon( approximately).
I also re-partitioned my C partition. System did reboot OK, though with a few glitches( power reset twice). However no major issues in my very short term trial.
I have few questions BTW.
1- Why it needs to run chkdisk after partitioning( it was not so whe I used BING to partition).
2- It seems to have no reboot and restore function like ATI( for restore to C partition). Am I correct?
3- While using recovery CD I found no option to restore standard MBR or imaged MBR. Am I missing something? also recovery CD is not user friendly like ATI.
4- I can use one licence for one PC only? Anybody read the EULA( I have not it currently installed).
Thansk for any answers!

I finally made time & got it installed and went straight-way (since i'm familiar with Paragon) to resizing partitions, changing drive letters, deleting & creating partitions and the like and notice it's just like all Paragon productions i been using for years. Real user-friendly and fast as i need it to be without coughing up issues & glitches like some others i won't mention but are taken for popular these days.
Hmm, now i got a HDM6 & 8, and they both work fine. I like the GUI improvements and a little more detail in the latest versions of course. As always they work perfectly for my drives and ended the frustrations i suffered with the others long ago.

in the bacup screen you can tell it to backup the MBR as well as the partistions you want.
so go to the folder you put the images e.g. arc_ if you used standard options you should find two images files in the folder.
one e.g. GB in size and one KB in size.
the KB size one is the backed up MBR
if not go to the backup screen and just tick the MBR box to back it up.

With Paragon Hard Disk Manager 8 you get the functionality of Acronis TrueImage AND Acronis Disk Director together. If you want to evaluate, you could start with the rescue CD, which is fully functional.
Paragon doesn't modify the MBR and unlike TrueImage it doesn't install a service. I think that a conflict is unlikely.
Upgrade fees of Paragon are very reasonable and they have frequent promotions.

I screwed the pouch on buying Drive Backup 8.5 Personal Edition. You have to purchase the Professional Edition, at twice the price, to get the Cyclic Backup to limit the size or numbers of backup images. Acronis calls this Quotas and is included in ATI10.
Also, I am not sure what the $11 Recovery Disk is - WinPE or Linux. Support told me Linux can't handle files over 2GB which is why the images have to be split. WTF.

All the screenshots I took are from the recovery CD.
When you create an image of the whole disk, you are able to select which areas you want to backup: any combination of MBR, first track and partitions.
When you restore and select the complete archive (the archive is also a combination of the previously selected areas), you are able to select which areas to restore.
I suggest that you create an image of the whole disk, including MBR, first track and first partition. And check your options when you restore from the same archive.
The recovery CD is based on Linux (full mode), and the safe mode is based on DOS.

Pedro,
I usually take an image of the system partition only.
Aigle was asking about the MBR, and I showed all the options that are available from the Recovery CD.
MBR and first track don't take much space in the archive, so if you like you could always include them. You are able to ignore them when you restore (for example to a different size harddisk).

ok this is how i made the recovery cd for paragon 8.0 hard drive manager,
i went to the recovery media wizard and choose the virtual cd drive
it then created it to the virtual drive.
then browse to the program files find the paragon folder and in a sub folder you will find a folder called ISO.
burn the iso called something like virtual to a cd using your fav cd burning program.
then boot the pc from the cd.
you can restore the images from that.
i have successfully restored an image with the that method of creating the recovery cd and then booting from that cd.

I use IFW/IFD for imaging, so I plan to use Paragon 8 just for disk partitioning. Does it play nice with RAID?
