View Full Version : Retention of data in incremental backup

I am currently evaluating a trial of Acronis True Image 10.

I have setup a routine to backup my files to an external hard drive. This is an incremental backup, so that new files are appended to the old backup file. However, when I delete a file from the source of the backups, it stays in the backup file (just as it should - in case I deleted in inadvertently and/or need to restore it).

However, I don't want files deleted from the source to stay in my backup forever, or else I'll end up with an enormous backup file containing every file to ever exist in my My Documents folder.

I need to be able to set some retention rules to tell Acronis to delete files removed from the backup source from the backup file X number of days after they are deleted from the source.

Can anyone tell me if this is possible? If not, is there a way to make suggestions to Acronis for future developments?

Thanks,

Gary

AFAIK, this is not possible unless it is some feature of TI10which I don't use but I don't think so. Acronis (wisely) never modifies the internal contents of a backup file. If a change, such as deleting a file in a mounted image, is made it captures the change in an incremental.

You sound like you plan on running a long chain of incrementals. Consider making a new full at suitable intervals and the problem will diminish significantly. Remember if you have a bad incremental in a chain of them all succeeding incrementals are useless.
