View Full Version : Wipe Disc before Restore ?

It is well known that a format will not securely wipe the disc, and that files can be retrieved after a format. I think that the format does the same as deleting files via the Windows Recycle Bin i.e. the file is still there but the information pointing to its location on the disc is erased making it invisible to the OS and therefore enabling it to be overwritten.
Now assuming one has a rootkit would it be advisable to first wipe the entire disc with a utility like Eraser and only then restore an image backup ? It would be nice if Acronis incorporated an option like this as part of restore.

Regards.

If the image doesn't contain any of the rootkit I don't think wiping the disk really is an issue. If the image contains the rootkit then wiping the disk is useless. Certainly wiping the disk would give you more peace of mind though.
