Using Acronis DD 10... I resized a partition downward from 40 gig to
20 gig for the purpose of creating a dual boot system. The partition
had 7 gigs of data on it....plenty of space left over. Partition resized and
I was able to create the second partition without a problem...installing an
XP system in the second partition.

Now the original partition booted, but partway through the boot sequence
it returned a "Windows protection error" which was very difficult to troubleshoot... not drivers or protected files or anything.

This is the SECOND time this has happened...two different systems... First
time I didn't bother doing a backup and got burned pretty badly... This
time, I had the system backed up so all that was needed was a system
restore and reloading the XP system after the Win98... so that the
multiple boot menu was valid.

But this is not supposed to happen is it ?? The way I read the directions,
you can resize partitions, (subject to published limitations) with data on
them and expect the system to perform normally.

What am I doing wrong ??

Thanks it advance for your help !!

Are you overclocking by any chance ? I am an avid overclocker myself and throughout the years the only time I have ever gotten the windows protection error was when I overclocked just a hair to much . If you are overclocked just humor me and back your settings down some just to see if that might be it .If thats not it then one last thing is try setting your bios settings to default one time and then reboot and see if it goes .

Just a vanilla flavored pc..no overclocking or mod's. Volume is FAT32 format.

I didn't try to return bios to default, but they were'nt changed anyway..and
still recognized the drive.

Followed the Microsoft recommendations for troubleshooting... it boots in
safe mode. Ran file checker. Started with a minimum configuration then
adding modules. At a certain point, it was beginning to point to a certain
driver..(which I replaced) however Microsoft documentation states that
when a driver is named... it can be anything happening in the system from
the last operation to the current operation and not necessarily the driver.

It's definitely reproductible... downsize a windows 98SE partition and you
get a "windows protection error" which doesn't seem to be resolved by
following the standard troubleshooting flowcharts.

DD isn't supposed to do this is it ??
