I was reading that Acronis has an agent for Linux servers. Does the agent do a file backup/restore or is it possible to backup the partitions for a bare metal restore?

(edit) Oops...missed the server part in your question. Sorry.

FWIW, however, TI ver 10 Home does a really good job for me with Linux on my desktop machine, including bare-metal restorations.

I can backup and restore (any mode) the Linux partitions from either the XP side of a dual-boot machine or use the recovery CD to boot a Linux-only machine to backup and restore.

You will have to maintain some sort of Windows installation to install, configure and create the recovery CD to boot a Linux only machine. I am told, but have not personally tried it, that you can do this by installing the TI package onto a suitable Windows VM running under VMWare or Parallels for Linux, and very soon, the free and open-source KVM package being incorporated into the 2.6.20 Linux kernel.

I have not purchased a retail box package of True Image, but if that comes with a booting rescue CD in the box, you might be able to use that on your Linux partitions without having to maintain a Windows installation just to create the rescue CD.
