Best ondemand scanner?

What is the best on demand scanner that has good detection rate, frequent updates and fast scanning?

By "on-demand" I am assuming you mean free.

Probably SuperAntiSpyware.

I alternate on-demand scans between the two every couple days. They are regularly updated and seem able to remove whatever they find.

SAS and Tiny Watcher. I say Tiny Watcher mainly because as a scanner It detected all the hidden and new file creations and registry modifications that were done by malware that I have tested. It won't prevent or clean but it'll let you know when something has happened to your system. This alone can save you alot of time scanning and cleaning infections just by doing a simple clean restore provided you have a set up to do it.

i thought on demand meant that the program doesnt sit in the background, you have to manually start the program up and make it scan.

SAS and A-Squared seem pretty good, not sure about DrWeb as it comes with an AV built in.

Well some ondemand software does have a process in backround all the time.
Eg.: Bitdefender or AVG AS (30 days trial, then free) had, when I last used it.

Dr.Web CureIt should not conflict with realtime AV, because it does not instal.
AVG AntiMallware includes both AV (AVG AV) + AS (AVG AS - former Ewido AM).
AM means, that it scans for all nasties ala mallware (viruses, spyware, trojans, etc).

no, AVG AS also scans for trojans and keyloggers and such.

avg anti-malware is like a combination of avg anti-virus and avg anti-spyware.

Correct, but I found you can stop the AVG AS Guard from starting in XP via:
Contol Panel/Admin Tools/Component Services/Services Local.
Workaround seems to have no ill-effects.
