I currently use eTrust promo as my on-access scanner. As you know, there is no tech support for it (except for submitting undetcted/unknown viruses):'( .
my question is: how much I need AV tech support ? ???
Do I have to switch to another -free- AV that offer free tech. support ??? (I used to use Avast4 as my on-access scanner, now I use it as my backup one)..
thanx in advance :)

My tongue-in-cheek reply would be, "you shouldn't need much tech support if you install the program and leave it alone!" ;)

Seriously, though--my personal experience with both of the programs you mentioned have been problem-free, but YMMV. :)

Thats so true Jim It I like mina and yourself have e Trust v7 ( I also use the ez firewall ) . There is now no need at all for contact with CA . It just rolls along . Not so long ago I was addicted to downloading every new firewall and anti virus and playing with them .
Since Iv settled down and are happy with what Iv got for this year , I have no problems on my system

AV Tech support in general is becoming a must more and more each day; it's for good reasons most major ans respected AV companies offer email support and most of them support forums as well. And for good reasons: a certain major company is being critized nowadays after outsourcing their support to a non-English native speaking country all over the web, thus frustrating their paying customers, who are in need of support.

The fact one did not have to rely on support for product X is of no importance in this context; the overall picture is.

paul

You asked a legitimate question, Minacross. Sorry about my crappy, non-helpful answer. ;)

Yes, it's pretty important IMO to have good tech support--no matter what program you are using. There's nothing more frustrating--and time-wasting, to not be able to get an answer when something goes wrong or messes up your computer--or when the product doesn't do what was advertised.

Having been on both ends of the situation, I'd make it a priority--free proggie or not. ;)

;) Hi minacross,

- IMHO, as with most things (almost everything) "inside the PC", we all need good tech support from time to time. I believe it is a necessity.
- Nobody knows everything about everything - hence, the highly specialized skill set is needed in almost every area of IT, be it Spyware, Admin, networks, AV, you name it - we need specialists. There are many "generalists" available, of which I'm one, but there are times when we have to get to those who "know the code" to get the bottom line answer. We all rely on them, heavily at times.
- Just ask javacool, or merijn - nobody knows their code like they do. :)

Edit: sp errs

eTrust has an excellent resource library and also a forum for users to post questions Mina( I will look for the link and instant you with it - This forum is more utilised for businesses) . Their knowledge base ( FAQ) Through "sammy" is very good . The only time i had a question it was answered by email personally regarding e trust promo
However perhaps its time for them to have a more visable forum and one that is accessable by the everyday home user . So its maybe time to write and suggest this . It happened with kaspersky through Igor and lisa and a forum was set up , so it can happen ,maybe with e Trust .
