Think I'm going senile.......let's see.....where was I?.....oh yeah..........seems to me that when one wants to upgrade a previous (free) version from an older version of free..........they have to shut something down in the previous version??? Please help me remember.

Hi Bob,
It might be a little bit depending on which your previous version is.

1. Do I have to uninstall my previous copy of ZoneAlarm to upgrade to the new ZoneAlarm?
No. Just install the new version right on top of it. It is recommended that you shut down ZoneAlarm before installing the new version. To do so, just right click on the ZA icon in the Windows system tray and select "Shutdown ZoneAlarm."
BUT I myself would do it the old way, described here:

I have to agree. I always remove the old version carefully and install the new version fresh. While many people say they've upgraded over the top of the previous version without problems, enough people have problems that it just seems safer to go the clean route.

And I fully agree with you LWM !!!!! :)
We all have seen in the past much too much problems caused by not properly doing it..... ::)
Ask for example my buddy Blaze about his experiences..... ::) Eh, better not ask.... ;)

Hey guys ;D
After u uninstall old version is it neccesary to clean out old registry keys or just reinstall za?

I did this last time because i had some problems but it took me forever to clean all ZA out of the registry.
Seems like ZA gets into everything when u install it.

If you are talking about a recent version of ZA being the old version, then you should not need to clean out the registry. Every version has shown that the uninstaller has been getting better and better. If someone were to jump a few versions, then I might say that the manual instructions at the Zone Labs site (linked above) would be worth checking.
The best way to get a clean install of Zone Alarm is as follows...
-{ Quote: "1. In ZA user interface, go to the Overview panel > Preferences tab > and clear the check from the general option "Load ZoneAlarm at startup".
2. Reboot system.
3. Check task manager and make sure that no ZA processes are running (these would be vsmon.exe for all versions, and the ZA GUI called either: zonealarm.exe, zaplus.exe or zapro.exe). If any of those are still running - you have a problem!!
4. If those are not running following the reboot, then execute the uninstall from Add/Remove Programs or from the link in the Zone Alarm Folder (they are the same).
5. If ZA uninstall does not force a reboot at the end, then reboot your system yourself.
6. Spot-check system... make sure the Zone Alarm program folder is either gone or empty. Also, empty out the x:\Windows\Internet Logs\ folder (maybe you'll want to save old log files first) - this is where the old ZA database is stored. (Note that ZAPlus and ZAPro users now have the option to make database backups (to XML files) before deinstalling so that they don't have to reprogram all their configs manually. I recommend using that type backup instead of trying to reuse the database files themselves.)" }-
That's it. The key is the reboot steps! Clear that flag so ZA doesn't start, reboot, then make sure it isn't running before attempting the uninstall. That is where almost all trouble with ZA uninstalls / upgrades comes from!

Thanks LowWaterMark
If u saw my earlier post i just copied over 4.0 with 4.5.
U guys got me thinking when u said there has been many problems doing it this way.
So far everything is ok but maybe i should do a clean install anyway just to avoid problems down the road. Your instuctions are very helpful.
Thanks again LWM ;D

No need, as I said it does work fine for many people. If it is working for you then that is great.
It's just I always recommend the cautious way given the people that do have problems. I think ZA is getting better at this with each version, but until it gets really close to 100% success, I'll always advise doing it the way I said above. So, if someone comes along before they do the upgrade and asks, I always tell them this same thing.

I guess I must have had a flag go up which pertained to some other program rather than ZA. I have the latest ZA before this latest ZA so.........

The flag keeps popping up and the bell is ringing. Seems to me that it was advised that you should go to the control center in your previous version of ZA, go to overview, and click on the preferences tab. Then you should uncheck "Load ZA at startup". Wasn't this previously advised when upgrading?

Hi everyone
Just an update from yesterday, u guys (LowMaterMark,FanJ) were right about doing clean install instead of copying over old ZA, true vector started crashing this morning, did it about 4 times so i decided to uninstall ZA and reinstall as per instructions from LWM and everything seems ok so far.
So if there is anyone out there wondering if they should do a clean install or just upgrade existing version,
DO THE CLEAN INSTALL! It will probably save u headaches later on.
Thanks again guys ;D

Hi Snowbound,
Did you have a look at this great site from CrazyM (and with contributions from Joseph and others):
http://www.gpick.com/agnisrules/index.html
Although it is in the first place aimed at AtGuard and NIS/NPF, you can learn a lot from it in general about how to set up firewall-rules.
My advice: have a look there ! ;)
And then there is of course this great info from LowWaterMark for ZA Plus/Pro:

Some ZoneAlarm Plus users who attempted to update (through automatic or manual Check For Updates) received the update for ZoneAlarm Pro by mistake, rather than ZoneAlarm Plus. Since the user's existing license was not for ZoneAlarm Pro, the product immediately went into Trial Mode.

I installed ZAP 4.5 over 4.0, and it has been running perfectly fine. I think it's worth trying an upgrade, and to just do a clean install if problems arise later.

I also installed 4.5 over 4.0 with no problem. I suspect the key is how one does this. I've noticed in some of the forums, people say just click on the tray icon and shutdown Zone alarm, and then install. I suspect this is the path to ruin.
I did it more or less like LowWaterMark stated. I went into the control panel and unclicked the load on startup. Then rebooted and made sure both ZAPRO and VSmon were shut down. Then I did the upgrade, made sure the load on startup was checked and rebooted. Worked just fine.

Hi everyone
Well yesterday i reinstalled new version ZA+ for the third time! Geez my system just hates everything i install ;)
Everything seems to be working great now.
I just have one concern. I did a registry scan today with regseeker and found these two files,
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ZONELABS\CERBPROVIDER.PVX
DLL FILE DOES NOT EXIST
Second one is,
WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\UNINSTALL\ZAPLUS
C:\PROGRAMFILES\ZONELABS\ZONEALARM\HELP\
ZAPLUS.CHM
This is a helplink file. Says file or path does not exist.
Does ZA need these two files to operate correctly?
I don't know what happened, i was very careful when reinstalling. Like i said ZA seems to be working ok.
Should i just delete them? I'm not sure what to do know.
I'm no expert on ZA(or anything thing else for that matter) ;)
Can someone advise me on this please?
Thanks

Also noticed in ZA+, when i go to
Program control and then programs , when i right click on selected program, click on properties and then close,
Za+ crashes.
Also happens when in Overview screen when i click on
"what's new at zone labs" only crashes when closing.
The only characteristic seems to be anything i click on in ZA+ interface that needs internet axcess crashes when closing window.
Other than that ZA+ is working fine.
All 3 installs had this same problem.
Any ideas?

Hi snow
I couldnt reproduce the crash problem u have.
I would delete those reg entries regseeker found, just be sure to bak em up ( i delete all the other ones first leaving only the suspect entries and then delete them. Then your most recent backup will contain only those 2).

On my WinXP system, I had a problem with vsmon.exe crashing whenever any user logged off. This did not happen during shut down or reboot attempts, just log offs. The vsmon.exe crashes corrupted the ZAP database, forcing it to revert to its own backup.
A totally (and I do mean totally) clean install of ZAP 4.5 did not help. Zone Labs support was thoroughly useless, as expected.
I did have Fast User Switching enabled, which I have since disabled. I have not tested for the crash since having disabled Fast User Switching (there's only so much torture I can take).
Other than that, I really like the new release.

Yeah, I got replies from Zone Labs, too.
I told them first off that I'd already tried clean installs. So they told me to try a clean install.
I told them another clean install attempt didn't work. So they told me to empty out the "Internet Logs" directory.
I asked them why on earth emptying the "Internet Logs" directory alone would work, when several clean installs (which involved totally removing the "Internet Logs" directory) didn't work. They told me "Just do it", and closed my ticket.
I'm pretty sure that Zone Labs and Symantec are outsourcing to the same "tech support" company.

I figured out my problem yesterday.
ZA+ is conflicting with wormguard. This is nothing new for me as wormguard doesn't like a lot of the programs i have.
Just something about wormguard and XP, they hate each other ;) at least on my box.

I've always just upgraded. Never had a problem before. Tonight, I uninstalled Wormguard, then reinstalled with ZA and everything else shutdown. On reboot (everything running), I ran the first test file. The warning window came up. OK, fine. But when I clicked "OK", Wormguard threw an Illegal Operation Error. Later I'm going to try that file again with ZA shutdown.

I had to put a rather embarrassing post on the Wilders board to get a positive response last time. Before the embarrassing post, they just wrote me off. I've been a really good mood since before Thanksgiving. Haven't really felt like ruining it by fighting with Zone Labs. I'm running Goback on my PC. I might check to see if I can run it back far enough to get the previous version back. I think I can.

U should be able to restore old version with GOBACK.

Hi ArchAngel and welcome to Wilders....
A clean instal is always wise. I suggest that if possible, that you download the trial version on to a CD and then disconnect from the internet and do the instal after you have uninstalled your previous firewall. My ZAPro runs trouble free and works great. ;)
