OK...

Let me first post some system specs:

P4-3.2 GHZ on Asus P4C800E-Deluxe Not overclocked!
1 GB of Corsair XPS PC-3200 SDRAM
2 WD 74 GB Raptors in Raid 0 on Intel ICH5R Raid Controller
Backed up to Seagate 200 GB HDD in Acomdata Firewire Enclosure

OK...so I first backed up on install. Verified the image during backup..success...rebooted...wiped the hard drives...set up a new raid array...booted to recovery CD (not BartPE) and restored without validating the image again. Success...booted right into Vista

Second try...ran msconfig and disabled all the Acronis in startup. Deleted my old image...ran a new backup...and restored...Success!!! Rebooted into Windows Vista AGAIN!

Only one caviat...during bootup...always get a shutdown error...asks to restart Windows Normally...choose yes and I'm in.

I was skeptical...but no longer. I did not break up the image into smaller parts...just left it one size...

Hope this gives encouragement...I did these tests on the evaluation version...Time to install Vista Permanently and buy Acronis...on to Newegg...

I am getting Vista today and will be installing it on my P5B-Deluxe/WiFi computer.

I'm curious, does the shutdown error happen at every reboot? Or did it just happen on the first boot after the restore?

Have you done any multi-boot restore tests? If, for example, Vista is on partition A and XP is on partition B, does restoring partition B cause any problems with Vista?

No...the message "Windows Did Not shut down properly" only appears the first time you boot into the OS. Choose run Windows Normally and you will not see again...
