RSS vs. VSS on Vista

I switched to rss mode because it was faster on the XP version. I recently did the same thing with this new Vista beta. Now I am getting up to 5000 errrors when I copy a snapshot. I can boot into the new snapshot without any apparent problems.

It seems that there is alot of shortening of filenames activity going on.

Would it be better to switch back to vss mode?

There is another post in this forum regarding this subject, but it pertains to the XP version.

Does anyone have any insight into this anomaly?

Here is a sampling of the Detail Log where there were about 5000 errors. The exported file has 4.5 mb so I could not post the whole thing here.

I am getting these errors intermittently. Even with the errors, I am able to boot into the snapshot with no major problems. I was getting some shut downs of the Vista Search service after a snapshot change and just after boot the other day, but I switched the index file to my D: drive and it seems okay now.

Another problem, which may not be related to First Defense is that when I copy a snapshot to an already archived snapshot onto a separate internal SATA drive, there is about a 5 minute delay after it is copied until it is finalized and the tweeter goes off. The same thing happens on my external SATA drive hooked up to a USB 2 port. I just bought 2 750Gb Seagates, and it might be that I have the pins set wrong as I have a 1.5 Gbs motherboard and the drives maybe set at 3 Gbs, but I don't think so.

I've noticed even on XP archiving to another drive that over time a delay builds up in the finalizing. When it gets to a point my I want to fix it, I just delete the archive and recreate it. That solves the problem. I also usually take that opportunity to defrag that drive.

Hi Peter,

I will try that. I just checked my motherboard and it is SATA2. I reset the pins on the hard drives with no change.
