View Full Version : F-Secure Updates Failed...?

Has anyone managed to get F-Secure updates this evening? Mine last updated this morning, but I noticed the yellow ! this evening, next to Last Update Check, and when I try to Check Now, it just comes up as failed to connect to server. This is the evaluation version, and should be valid until 27/02. :-\

I reinstalled F-Secure this evening. At first it was unable to connect to the server to validate my license. After probably 20 minutes it was able to. I then updated about 30 minutes ago. I think something must have been wrong with the servers.

The slow updates is my major complaint with FS, bu;t other than that it causes fewer problems than any other AV except Avast that I have used.

Best,
Jerry

When you say "slow updates", do you mean the time it takes for them to download, or that they are slow to appear in the first place? I have to say, mine updates every morning, and usually a couple of times throughout the day, and I haven't really noticed the time it takes for the updates to download.

The updates are now coming through OK, so it must have been a server problem last night, which I should be used to, having used KIS for several months.

It takes several minutes for the updates to complete loading, as opposed to seconds for KAV. Admittedly FS AV has more to update than KAV. It also sometimes does not update on weekends, but did this morning.

It has been, along with Avast Home, the most trouble free AV I have used for any extended length of time. KAV is constantly making changes that cause problems on some computers. Whether FS is keeping up to date or just does the changes better I do not know, but what I do know is that it runs real well on my system
At start-up it takes about a minute and half for it to appear, as opposed to about 15 seconds with KAV so considering the updates my machine with KAV is ready a couple of minutes or so faster, but I don't consider that a bother.

Best,
Jerry

Can't argue with any of that, Jerry. :)

This is exactly what I found a bit annoying on FSAV2007 when I first installed the software but considering it's very stable on my pc I guess I can live with this start up delay :)

BTW, about the updates it's strange, I haven't experienced any problem with them lately.

This is the first time I have experienced update problems with FSIS, in my on and off usage over the last year. It was quite common in KIS to be notified of an update error, so much so, in fact, I turned the alerts off. They usually rectified things in an hour at the most.

Would not worry to much, Deep Guard has you covered even if updates are delayed.

click on internet shield, you have application control, set to prompt and you have Intrusion Protection, set to block and log. You are well covered.

having deepguard on default settings blocked my creative sound card driver form installing.
so i had to get it to alert me on all changes and clear up the install so it would start again.

hmm no i think it was f-secure uninstall problems if i remember correctly.
i tell it to uninstall it tells me right away that its done and to reboot.
it reboots and the f-secure icon loads;D
so i used the f-secure removal tool to uninstall it rebooted and installed kis6.0
my faultly ram has caused all my programs to close randomly at some point including avp.exe, opera, firefox etc etc.

well they are both good, joined at the hip. Also if I were to install something,::) I would disable that part of F Secure, for the moment.

lodore
February 3rd, 2007, 06:38 PM
erm doesnt that knida destroy the idea of HIPS?
the idea of HIPS is to provent unknown virus/malware from installling.
if you disableing it during instal and for somereasion its an unsafe .exe file then it will execute.
when my pc is connected to the net kis6.0 is never turned off.
f-secure was always on for the time i used it.
the 2007 version was the only version that stopped me installing except the spysweeper 4.5 conflict;D
but i blame webroot for that.

sorry if it's off thread, does FS website host any kinda 'latest virus detected' full list page like Kaspersky (http://www.kaspersky.com/viruswatchlite) and GData (http://www.antiviruslab.com/newentries.php?lang=gb)? I was browsing there and found only a short list of the latest 50 virus modifications: http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/_new.shtml

are you isnt fsis 2007 or just the av?
if you using fsis2007 then the internet sheild is the firewall and not deepguard.

this is what your looking for

realtime protection and the system control is deepguard.
i used to use the ask my pomission option so i get to choose everytime it asked.

I cannot find anything that says "Internet Shield" in my FSAV.

Under real time scan it has 4 options.
1. Scan all files
2. Scan defined files.
3. Scan inside compressed files.
4. Scan web traffic (HTTP)

the default was evidently 2. I checked 4, but I am not sure what should be the one checked. Only one can be checked.

What do you recommend?

Thanks,
Jerry

OK, I thought I did not know how to read.;D

Do you or anyone else have a view as to what should be scanned in real time as above post?
I sometimes read that such and such an Av does not scan HTTP traffic, and that is supposed to be unsafe, but I have no idea about it. It is not the default.

What are the opinions?

Thanks,
Jerry

I miss my F-Secure :'( Oh the price we pay to have the latest technology, lol. I found out that the FS Vista beta was for FSAV '07 only, not the suite. Still pondering on whether or not to download it. I really need a better firewall than Vista's even though it has outbound control (which is not enabled by default and is kind of over my head on how to set it). Right now there isn't a firewall I like that is Vista compatible.

On some other Vista forums I am seeing praises of TMIS '07 running excellent on Vista. I found a website that was selling it for $24 which is less than half what I paid for FSIS '07. Since I am very familiar with it, being a beta tester for TM for three years, I am considering buying and installing it.

I just wish I knew FS's roadmap to when the Vista-compatible suite will be out.

Jerry, I am not quite sure why FS chosen not to have the HTTP scanner on by default though it could be turned on when you select "High" protection (I have no way to test this now). I remember one AV I tested (can't remember which one) I had turned it's HTTP scanner on and it really slowed browsing down. That was why I was kind of apprehensive at first when I turned FS's on. Also I had "defined files" on as well.

Thanks, Midway for the response. I have not used that computer since I changed it. I will see how it does. I may have to go back to the default.

On FSAV the equivalent would be: Virus&Spy Protection tab / Real-time scanning / Configure / System Control tab / Action on System Modification Attempt

Simon6776

"Internet Shield" is the Firewall component, so that would only be in the Suite, yes?

Under your 4 options, Jerry, you should be able to tick Scan web traffic (HTTP) and Scan inside compressed files as well as one of the others. I have mine set as below, in Normal mode. You may have to use Custom mode to change some of the options. I would have thought the AV component is the same in the suite and the stand alone version. :-\

I have mine set to scan HTTP traffic, and I see no slow down what soever. Especially to the slow down I had with KIS and HTTP scanning.

Simon6776
February 4th, 2007, 05:08 AM
Yes, I agree. Do you also find that your connection speed is better with FS? Mine seems to be, but it could be coincidental.

trjam
February 4th, 2007, 05:18 AM
The suite is as fast as any stand alone AV product I have ever use. I just contacted the one person there I thimk I know to ask about AV updates. We will see what they say. Keep in mind that alot of AV companies only update once in a 24 hour period.

trjam
February 4th, 2007, 05:25 AM
Also F Secures AV has heuristics. Avira is the same way. Updates every day and relies on its heuristic engine for the detection between updates

1. turn on scan http traffic.
2. dont turn on scan archives it will slow your pc like nothing else..
i sometimes turn the scan archives option off in kav.
3. never use the scan all files options that a sure way of making a pc taking 10 years to load the desktop.
when i told it to scan all files f-secure just hogged 100percent cpu at startup intill i turned the option off since it doesnt have ichecker/iswift
ive tryed all those options in the years i had f-secure

scan archives should not affect speed in f-secure for http traffic.

lodore
February 4th, 2007, 07:32 AM
the scan archives is for scanning files and not for the http scanner.
you cant set a limit of how many mb archives to scan in realtime.
so if you have a 700mb archive it will scan it in realtime and slow down your pc for ages.
so like in drweb you turn that option off.
unlike in drweb in f-secure you cant edit the ini file to set the limit of mb of archive to scan in realtime

yes i agree, but enabling the option on f-secure should not slow down surfing.

only if you plan on downloading large archives it will, same as dr.web

small archives has no difference.

Yes, this is exactly what they recommend within its built in help guide:

Scan all files: Scans all files for viruses. We recommend scanning all files, unless the computer is slow. You can speed up the system performance by scanning defined files only. There is a small risk of missing some infections when scanning defined files only.

Scan defined files: Scan only a predefined set of files. This option is recommended for the real-time protection. Click View... to define files that you want to scan.

Scan inside compressed files: Scans files inside compressed ZIP, ARJ, LZH, RAR, CAB, TAR, BZ2, GZ, JAR and TGZ archives.
Scanning inside large compressed files uses a lot of system resources and slows down the system. Therefore it is not recommended with the real-time protection. This setting is for advanced users only. Do not enable this setting unless you have a specific reason to do so.

Thanks, All.

I do not detect any slowdown of any kind with the scan HTTP turned on.
I find myself liking FS more as time goes by. I never seems to give any trouble, and yet it is among the top in detection. I am glad that the load on my system is not enough to notice or at least to find objectionable.:thumb:

Jerry
