want to know what happened

somehow i got banned on a site, but how?? thats what i want to know..what does it involve? can they get my home address & name? how could they know my private stuff like that (which they must have in order to ban me)??, etc. need all of it answered please.

i'm new to the internet (only been on for 6 weeks), so forgive my obvious ignorance.

p.s. i was banned for posting a joke twice on a non-joke section.

The only link in the chain that has your address is your Internet Service Provider. Now they provide you with an alternative form of address to use on the internet - this takes the form of a number - your IP address. Depending on your ISP this may be static (always the same address) or dynamic (the address changes). Note that the frequency of any IP change and range of possible addresses depends on the individual ISP.
