Customizing desktops (Linux)

Hello,
I'm a noob when it comes to visualization and styling of desktops.
Was wondering if anyone has any ideas how to make a cool desktop? I have yet another new Ubuntu machine and I want to pimp it.
No need for extra Linux skills - just ideas as to how to arrange the desktop.
And of course, if you know special styles, themes etc, you're welcome to suggest them.
