Windows Defender never seems to do anything ( except go wrong once in a while) so I have changed to AVG Anti Spyware 7.5 ( free) ie Non Resident Shield.
Is there anyone out there who thinks that Windows Defender might be better ?
again assuming only used for Scaning and not actively running.

I highly doubt Defender is in the league as AVG AS.

AVG Anti Spware is definitely the better choice!

Thanks everyone
The final choice (until I change my mind) is:
(1) Netgear DG834 Firewall
(2) Firefox (No scripts)
(3) Net Address delivering mail checked for spam and virus
(4) Antivir PE Classic Free - On demand
(5) AVG Anti Spyware Free - On demand
(6) ProSecurity 1.26

At the risk of repeating myself, I had Microsoft antispyware, later named Windows Defender installed on my pc for over a year and it found one piece of malware. I could do a scan and it would find nothing, and then I would run Ad-Aware and catch 3 data miners. As for AVG, I bought it when it was ewido, and run it live. It has caught over 2,900 bad things on it's own since I installed it.

Looks like a good, fast setup.
One other idea you can try is adding the dr web scanner link to firefox. It gives you the option of scanning a file using the online dr web scanner before you download it.

Thanks - Have just tried this. Am I using it properly ? I found a file which Dr Web checked saying it was clean and then downloaded in the normal way ?
Is there really much/any benefit to doing this compared to downloading and then using Antivir to check before activating a file ? Are there downloadable files which will auto run when the reach the desktop ? I suppose so otherwise why check before down load ?
