I saw a thread on Wilders this morning about an Adobe 7 security update this morning but cannot find it now. I think it had something to do with a java exploit vulnerability. Will un-ticking the "Enable Acrobat javascript" in preferences fix the problem without having to go through the security update? Version 8 is a behemoth (not that version 7 is small by any means). Is there a better pdf reader available? I have heard foxit is alright and is much smaller. I only use a pdf reader for reading, never writing stuff. Does foxit have the continual security issues that adobe has?

Thanks

I couldn't find the thread you refer to, but I ran some tests on this exploit last week:

pdf file exploits (http://www.urs2.net/rsj/computing/tests/pdf/)

If you are interested in just basic reader function, you can move all but the necessary plugins to a different folder, so that they don't load (my solution). This also makes Acrobat load much faster.

Or there are some other readers available:

pdf readers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:PDF_readers)

Hello,
You can indeed disable javascript - will solve most problems.
Furthermore, you should try Foxit. It's a million times lighter and faster. Adobe Reader takes about 150MB and 430 registry keys to install. Foxit takes 1.5MB and 4.3 keys. A vast clutter reduction.

Perhaps this is the Wilders Security thread you saw earlier:

I agree totally. FoxItReader is an excellent replacement for the huge Acrobat Reader. I dumped Adobe about a year ago for FoxIt and am 10000% satisified with my decision. :D

Thanks everyone for the replies. I think I'll give foxit a go and see what comes of it.

I did and I did. I did not install any of the extras and it still works great.
