Outlook & Thunderbird

Hi Guys,

1. Are there advantages to using Thunderbird instead of Outlook?

2. I presume email (existing) can migrate from Outlook to T-bird?

3. Can T-Bird use M$'s Word? Or what does it use to compose new email?

4. Would you then uninstall Outlook?

Hey, i have used Thunderbird for ages.
it will migrate all your settings.
the spam filter is better than the one in outlook as far as i know.
it has its own compose function but it also has its own dictionary.
i have outlook installed but my dad stupidly uses outlook express=D

1. There are a lot but I can list here a couple as they have to do with immediate practical use:

- Outlook often hangs upon downloading messages and later resumes to start downloading the same messages (so you have to resort to some tool to delete duplicate messages...). Never happens with TB.

- Outlook's internal message files structure is a joke: huge .pst files (usually the basical one has to be watched over the 2GB size or you will not be able to download messages and it does not tell you why), hard to control, a pain to compact and an eternity to backup.
TB keeps individual files for folders, so you can easily control their size and perform differential backups.

- TB has very useful extensions like changing mail's subject (it is a pain when your email service / AV just keeps putting there like [Spam] on the title and it's not), GMail to have instantaneous searches GMail like, downloading from all thelinks in a message, saving all attachments in a folder and many others.

2/3. As lodore wrote, no problem in migration and TB uses its own composer and dictionaries.

4. No need to uninstall if you wish... I keep it aside, just not enabled and TB set as default mail software.

Another very practical detail in TB: you can view the attachments (pics and so on) and html embedded objects for each message at your own specific choice.

TB Header Tools, I am using still 0.5.5 version with TB 1.5.0.8 with no problems.
