BitDefender Rescue CD

I've not yet installed BitDefender Internet Security v10, but I thought that I'd try booting from the Resuce CD.

At the end of the boot, I get a message something like:

"Can't find Knoppix filesystem sorry, Dropped you to a (very limited) shell. Press Reset button to quit."

Message is followed by a list of a few commands like cat and mount, the the following prompt:

knoppix#

1. What is the "Reset button". CTRL ALT DEL does cause a reboot.
2. There's nothing in the BD user guide docummenting commands for knoppix.
Is the user supposed to learn knoppix to use the rescue cd?
3. Why is there no, even crude GUI?
4. How can the file system not be found, heck it is booting from the CD?

Don't even waste your time with that, it will only cause headaches and unnecessary waste of time. That is not the typical rescue CD that users are accustomed to.

I am familiar with Linux and with Knoppix as well... but still, all I can say is don't waste your time. That CD, in particular, is not what you are looking for.

That CD is intended to do a particular task, and is part of the product, so my question remains how to fix the situation.

My apologies, I had assumed this was the same as their old LinuxDefender CD although it looks like they've taken a similar route.

1. You should just be able to type "reboot" or "poweroff" in the command line, without the quotes, and press Enter.

2. I just searched their website, documentation, FAQ and such for about 10 minutes and couldn't fine a damn thing on their Rescue CD, unfortunately.

3. There SHOULD be a GUI. It sounds related to the file system error on the disc itself.

4. It is obviously referring to the file system that Knoppix uses, and you're right, it doesn't make much sense seeing how the CD is in the drive and that is what you are attempting to boot from. According to the similar issue below, it may just be a bad burn of that disc.

Ayup, that's the same issue, but I purchased the retail kit, not a download.

If I install the product, is there an option to create a BD Rescue CD?

there is a iso image of the bitdefender rescue disc on ftp at bitdefender website.
I cant remember quite where thou.
but there is an old thread.

Thanx, I'll take a look at some point.
I'll try the USA site.

I found a workaround.

1. Copied the CD to CD-RW.
2. Used the following program, choosing a 32MB buffer, to compare the CD with the CD-RW, and the CD-RW with the CD. http://www.standards.com/index.html?CompareDrivesUsingFileContent

Indicated that there are 155 files.
It took quite some time for the CompareDrivesUsingFileContent program to process the 144th file. I expect that is the bad file.

3. Booted with the CD-RW.

4. Reset did not reboot, had to power down.

5. There were icons to my USB drives, but none to the hardrives.
There was one link that had a hodgepodge of stuff, perhaps it contained a link to My Computer. Very poor interface.

Still cannot boot with the CD.

For the time being, only version 9 rescue CD is available:

I guess the Rescue CD for 10.0 will be available soon after BD10 for Vista is release.

Something to look forward to! 300MB download!

P.S. I did a trial install using the original CD. That seemed to work, so the problem is likely with a file in the boot directory.

What kind of hard drive do you use?

filesystem error mean that Knoppix could not detect hard drive.

btw RescueCD is usefull tool but as other linux distros it is not compatible with all hardware like Windows.

3 SCSI hard drives connected to an Adaptec 2940UW.

The bad CD seemed to be the cause of not seeing the GUI.

But only 1 of the hard drives seems to be found, and all three USB drives.

If not compatible with the widely used 2940UW, I'd say there is a big problem.

I searched many Linux compatibility sites, and so far all have said "Adaptec AHA 2940UW Pro" is not compatible with Linux. Looks like a motherboard with many problems with Linux.

My motherboard, an ASUS K8V-X SE which is also somewhat widely used and been around for a while, also does not work with Linux unfortunately.

I can reluctantly accept that some mobos may not be compatible with Linux, but I will not accept that the 2940UW is incompatible.

Heck, for a long time, the 2940 was the first SCSI adapter tested by drive manufacturers. The 2940 was so widely used ...

My mistake for saying mobo instead of scsi. However, the compatibility links do refer to scsi. But who knows, I sure don't. I'm just going by what the majority of linux compatibility searching brought up for me through Google. Seemed to be nothing but trouble.

Bye thee waye, the issue is not Linux, it is Knoppix.
Acronis True Image's recovery CD uses Linux and has no problems recognizing the drives attached to the 2940.
