In your opinion which antivirus present or older had the best interface?
I know this sounds like a "spam" topic but to me this is very important, I am
extremely dissatisfied with the interfaces of todays antivirus solutions and
figured out that this is the major factor driving me away from the top
antivirus programs of today.
I would like to know which was/is your favorite and why.
Post a link to a screen if you can.
Personally I loved the original Avira Desktop for Windows (http://original.avira.com/en/products/AVIRA_Desktop_for_Windows.html) style interface.
It had a good color scheme, polished icons and a simple yet powerful menu system.

I have to go with the KAV/KIS 6 interface. A close second, maybe Bullguard.

NOD32! But should be simplified for simple users, and they will change on the incoming version...

I like best the interfaces with tabs like the one BitDefender has, it' easier to browse for the options. Another interface that I find very good for me is the ZoneAlarm interface, it's no antivirus but it looks good and clean ;)
I somewhat like Nod's interface, but I think it is to crowded. Another think that I like at BitDefender is that you can drag'n'drop a file into quarantine. And it comes in 2 colours :)

Trial BIS 10 before, I think it's the nicest looking interface among those listed in jotti's scanner. But it's firewall should have more options.

@EsoxLucius
I like the bitdefender interface as well.
i like the activity bar and the face you can drag files in to it to scan them.
so kaspersky interface and bitdefender are my two fav interfaces.

Personally, I would vote for F-Prot, the current version 6, as having a very pleasing interface. Simple lines, pleasant colors, not cluttered. I also very much like their icon (blue circle enclosing white, stylized symbols or letters).
Nothing complex about it.:)

I really am not that concerned with the interface because I do not look at it that much, but I do like the KIS/KAV 6 interface.

theres one simple thing i would like changed about the kis/kav interface.
a way of closing the protection tab.
so you can just have protection, scan and service showing without the file av,mail av etc showing all the time.
I mean collapse the protection tab at the side.
because you dont always need them showing.
i guess thats me being a bit picky.

I think that if the developers would do an interactive interface with colapsing or all sorts of animated menu or highly customizable interface will do more damage. The memory consumtion shall be larger when the interface is broght up and surelly the size on disk will be larger.

I look at the interface more than I should probably but that is a deciding factor for me.
What I look for in an interface along with support, detection, prevention, etc:
1. Easy to look at and distinguish program interface color and setup that looks finished.
1a. A tabular interface is great IF it is designed and utilized well
2. Descriptive meanings next to each option, not a book but a enough to know what it does.
2a. Well structured and documented help file to compliment #2
3. Expert or Advanced settings that aren't buried so deep I need a spelunking helmet.

I prefer Avast! interface, because i have it, it must be the best:thumb: ::)

I like F-Prot, and particularly VBA32.
Substance over style.
Everything succinctly layed out.
All that I need. No more, no less.

For me, the best interface in an AV was (in no specific order):
1) AVIRA Desktop for Windows (very nice)
2) Virus Chaser (Koreans *really* know how to make a good interface :))
3) Panda Titanium (it looks "cute")
4) Trend Micro (they've had a great interface since 2002)
5) BitDefender (pretty nice, but could use more colour schemes)

hmm interfaces,
i think symantec have always set the standard for interface design,
and i think nod32 has set the standard for the most complicated for finding settings, unless you know what your doing.
id love to say dr.web is the best interface, but i just cant. lol

@C.S.J,
personaly I think the symantec norton interface is horriblem its mainly a marketing devise for which Norton products you do and do not have.
macafee do the same thing.

Very nice and easy to navigate BD, KAV/KIS and AVIRA.
@Esoxlucius
I would like to have more colour in BD GUI, my actual "great" AV.

KAV 6 (or Kis) 8) :thumb:
And yes, I think the GUI is important. Must be intuitive and logical.

yes it is a marketing device, and even though you dont like it lodore, many many do, as it is very attractive, and norton have and probably still in the future, will have great interfaces.
its one of the things that makes it pleasing to the eye for people looking for security

I like the utilitarian style interfaces like Dr.Web, F-Prot version 3.x, early AVG, and Nod 32. No eye candy for me...

I am using Avira Suite and like the interface fairly well. Liked NO32's options but the interface is not as easy to navigate and use. Bullguard 7 has a great interface IMO. Again just speaking of interface and not much else about other qualities of the product.

F-Secure has my favorite design.
Am not using it anymore cus of the ad-aware engine wich i think saks and the av lack of anti dialers according to avcomparitives results. Dang shame. Weird since it uses kav engine ???

I'm a NOD user, but I'd have to go with BitDefender here as it has a better interface.

This thread has impressed me I was afraid it would falter and be viewed as a spam post.
As stated in the first post I feel the interface is a major component of any AV, and with the replies here from users I am happy to find out that I am not the only one whom heavily weighs the interface of a program.
Some of the answers here I see are to the effect of "I don't like the interface but ......"
I relate that to buying a vehicle you don't enjoy driving, but it gets good milage.
I want to enjoy my vehicle, which would make me feel I am getting the most out of my money.

I like the AOL AVS Interface which is mostly like KAV's. And I like Antivir's too. But this is coming from someone who has always liked AVG's Interface, both 7.1 and especially 7.5.

KAV/KIS has a pretty good GUI, I don't use it, but I like their interface. As far as the worst, I would say the standard Avast..don't get me wrong, it's a great program, but I hate the initial GUI...
I'm using AntiVir, it's pretty decent, but not the best.

My votes for best interfaces go for:
Nod32 2.7 (no eye candy, but when knowing it, VERY logic built up)
KAV 6 (Easy to have an overall view of, very clean and nice looking, logic to)
NAV07 (Easy to have an overall view of, very clean and nice looking, logic to)

nod32 has the best interface. It is concise, well laid out, and easy to access different modules and configure them.
Antivir has a nice options interface however, and it will come in second place for me.

I'll go with AntiVir PE Premium. I can whiz through my personal configuration in seconds! :thumb: to Eset's NOD32 for allowing the end user to truly fine tune the program.

you can fine tune kaspersky as well thou.

C.S.J
December 17th, 2006, 09:41 AM
but surely, all this fine tuning?
an antivirus should be install, and let it do its job..... for most of the population in the world, people want easy but effective protection, not a pain in the butt to find all these settings (especially nod)
add nortons friendly interface in 2007 and the no settings to change, fantastic detection rates, you can see why norton sells so highly.

I agree with you on that CSJ NAV07 is easy to understand for the everyday user, another interface that could be excellent is Ashampoo AV.
It is important for users to be able to understand an interface and be able to use it if need be.

i think it the default settings is fine for the average user like nod and kaspersky are. and tweakable for more advanced users aka kaspersky and nod32.
