I have already used Vista Ultimate for over a month. After running it and seeing how it works and the problems it created I won't be switching to Vista anytime soon.

I'm also not switch to Vista now, but only want to see your options...
After some months, maybe I will change and try it for the first time...

None. I will definately never have it on my pc, except if I get a laptop and it comes preinstalled, then I would just remove it. I have a feeling I will stick with Windows XP for games (hopefully the new directx will support it or even better that more companies will support linux), then *nix for everything else (probably Arch Linux and FreeBSD (due to performance issues over OpenBSD)). If you forced me to choose, I would go for the business edition since it won't have as much junk on it while still having more features, or maybe the ultimate.
Cheers,

The normal home user should get nothing other than Home Premium. The equivalent to the current XP Pro + MCE. Heck, you can get Vista Home Premium for $110.

I wont be switching my home setup (2000,xp,linux) yet from what I've seen although I'll have to have a copy to be able to work, -Ultimate.

I think, that I might give a try to Vista Home Premium and Ultimate in 2010.
So far I am not ready to buy new computer due to Vista (drivers, DirectX10).
Until SP1 for Vista is ready, it will have too many bugs and XP works just fine.
Also nLite for Vista is not quite ready and it will take time, till it will really work.

When I change to Vista at some point in time, it will probably be Home Premium, which is basically the same as XP Pro (vs. XP Home).

Having tried Vista Ultimate in Beta testing I'm afraid I won't be switching until they turn off the lights for XP.
Then I'll consider whether to make a full switch to Linux or think about a Mac.
Vista is just plain horrible and I refuse to pay even $110 for eye candy, bugs and restrictive practices.
As I've written before all of its new functions can easily be replicated for XP using free or bought add ons e.g. Media Portal, Window Blinds, HIPS etc.
God knows what MS have been doing with all the development of Vista but it runs like a slug on my high end machine and they've removed any of the functions I might have felt worthwhile like WinFS.
I think VistaME will prove to be a big mistake for MS.

I don't plan to use Windows Vista soon but when I upgrade , I am going to use Home Premium edition .
Reason :
1. It includes all I need + the new Aero style (not so important but...)
2. Its price ;)

Unless I get assimilated Vista will not be installed here. I am playing with the Windows XP Pro that came with my new PC and it's not exactly making an favorable impression. Linux is king of the woods here.

Alphatura1,
DirectX 10 will not work with/on Windows XP and there are no plans to ever enable it to do so. If anyone wants to play DirectX 10 games (natively, taking advantage of DirectX 10), they will have to run Vista.
This is why I will be running Vista some time in the future (probably not until SP1 is released though).

I wonder, if MS do not have people to develop DX 10 for XP or just it is not possible. I guess, based on the IE7, that IE8 will be available only in Vista, so I will be forced to use it anyway.

Whilst looking at some computer specs for Dell laptops I came across the following on a configuration page.
The combination of a 15.4" WSXGA+ screen & 128MB ATI® MOBILITY™ RADEON® X1300 graphic card will not be compatible with next generation Microsoft operating system Vista Home Premium and Vista Business!
There was no explamation as to why this combination would be incompatible, looking at a list of minimum recommende requirements for Vista on another site I was still at a loss for the incompatability. Have MSFT made a system that is incompatible with 15.4 widescreen, or is this Radeon card incompatible with it. Seems odd that anyone would still be knocking up windows computers that are incompatible with the next OS on the eve of it's launch
Service pack 3 for XP is due out in 2008 I will consider Vista after that.

I don't know why it was necessary but I voted again -> Windows Vista Home Premium . Reasons would be because of its price and because it includes everything I need . Just to add that I am not gonna buy it on 30 January . I first need to upgrade my own computer or buy a new one and after that I will most likely get Windows Vista HP edition . I am waiting for Windows Vista SP1 and ,of course , for Windows XP SP3 :)

I voted None- although I suspect ultimately I will like most people have to switch when MS turn out the lights on XP.
I've beta tested Vista extensively and I just don't like it. I feel it controls my computer rather than me controlling it.....
I remember first using XP and despite its unfamiliarity I liked it and felt it was something new and exciting. Vista just feels terminally dull and no great progression from what I've already got on my PC. Plus there's a definite slowdown in responsivenss on my PC. I don't like DRM and I don't like MS trying to monopolise the PC security market.
That said Linux is not quite my cup of tea and Macs are an unknown quantity for me so I'll wait a couple of years and see how Vista shapes up, whether Ubuntu truely becomes what I want or take a trip to the darkside and become a Mac user.
Home premium looks the best bet if I do weaken..... but boy will it have to be vLited!!

None.
Besides my belief M$ should change the name to Vista ME.
I'm running XP pretty well here with 1GB DDR RAM.
With Vista ME it's going to take 2GB DDR2 to achieve the same performance. What'll the RAM cost? Like $300-$500. Uh no thanks.

To my big surprise I saw that Win Vista Basic costs only 130 Euro (about $170) IMO a reasonable price so I think I might buy it in 2008, hopefully it will then be matured. And I donīt need the Premium edition, I donīt need Windows Aero, Media Center and the Premium Games. :)
But isnīt it kind of strange that Win XP Home is a lot more expensive? I donīt get it. In Holland it costs about 260 Euro ($335), but I saw it costs only 190 bucks in the USA. Iīm glad that M$ decided to stop ripping people of, over here at least. Here is a nice comparison btw: ;)

I voted none. xp home and pro are going to be supported through 2014. I've already had one buggy os (windows ME). I have no intention of ever installing vista. I've got 2 computers now. One is dual booting Windows me (only used for playing games) and xubuntu linux.
I just got a new dell computer for my birthday that has xp media edition installed. It will soon be dual booting a linux distro. Probably "pclinuxos" I will probably eventually go 100% linux on both pc's. However, I like a few games that microsoft has. So, I'll keep both computers dual booting for now.

Actually the situation is still the same over here in Holland, itīs the upgrade that costs only 130 euro, but you will loose your XP license.
So Vista full versions are still priced insanely high, the Ultimate version costs 625 euro just like MS Office Pro. And they wonder why people are "bootlegging" their sh*t? M$ must be out of there mind. So I guess I will probably get Vista Premium on my new machine in about 2 or 3 years.

im running ultimate here. i dont see why all the neg response to it. personally my machine has never run this good with xp. uac is a pain but turn it off. other than that so far everything i have experimented with has run flawlessly. i am only using 1 gb on a p4 northy 3.2 oc'ed to 4.0 on water. and it is simply so much faster then xp ever ran. at work i have xp pro and will be using it for some time since that machine doesnt need an upgrade yet and im not spending the money for it. so fo those in that situation i can see why you would not run it..
