Many updates to the modules, virus defs. Running Premium Suite, 77 files have been updated! Go to the Avira forums for more info.

One thing added is password protection for configuration as well as protecting other tasks and parts of the program. Very good! Went smotthly regarding the Suite update here.

I had this today with the PE Classic version as well. Thankfully, despite the size and amount of updates, the download speed remained fast from Avira servers.

under the extended threats catagories, one item called Application is added. Does anyone know what's that?

I have not been able to update either but its due to a large update. On the forum it says try later when the servers are not over loaded.

I only use the PE edition and understand that the people using the premium editions have the faster servers.

Since Avira have gone to incremental updates I have not had any problems up until now and I would not switch over just because of tonight.

My advice stick with it or updgrade to the premium edition as its good value.

Cheers

{QUOTE-> I am thinking of changeing av.I have tried all evening and can,t update <-QUOTE}If you have a WinXP system, why just download this IVDF (Unicode) archive from here (http://www.avira.com/en/support/vdf_update.html) and extract it to the C:\Program Files\AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic folder? I'm sure this is a temporary problem and it will be vanished tomorrow.

I guess I should be glad I got my update early.

It doesn't surprise me that with an update of this size, and the amount of users that run the free AntiVir PE that this would cause some serious problems. Especially with their increased popularity lately.

Hopefully this doesn't effect their paying customers, but I believe they use separate servers anyways.

I've been waiting for 5 min
and now it's updating ( some 4MB)

DaveD

At least as far as new installations are concerned, they should be recompiling an updated installer sooner or later that will have these latest updates included.

It looks like they have extended the license to 31/05/2007, so I'm guessing they probably will recompile an updated installer soon to include that as well.

Noticed after major update for the suite, under expert configuration under guard scan settings mine is set now to scan file extensions that are in the program's list instead of using smart mode or scanning all files. Anyone else noticed if that one or any other of your settings have changed after the update.

And, do you think I can leave it at that setting safely? Thanks.

Well, I am a fairly new Antivir Classic user, about 1.5 weeks. But that setting was there also before this day's update (3960 kB). And is also mentioned as default in the help file ;)

What worries me about these incremental or larger updates. Is there any chance that something, some virus definitions might get missed. Can one trust the update system? With Avast I never felt this much worried as I am now. Waiting hours for the update ???

Events tab now has more info and filters. License was also extended to 31th May 2007.
Oh and heuristics are now FINALLY enabled by default (Medium sensitivity). Thats a good sign as it will only help increase it's detection rate even further while help kill all the false positives (if users will be willing to submit the files).

I guess I am the only person having a problem getting this mega-update. Have tried repeatedly and after downloading partially I get an error, and the update stops.

I am using the the free version (on a secondary PC).

I did try yesterday many times from the 'Start Update' and finally I got it.
So you are not the only one.

There seems though still some problems, since this morning update servers (here in Finland) could not again be reached by the automatic once/day update.
It will not try again today since it failed? And I will have to remember to try to get the virus definitions manually today?

It looks like my AntiVir PE is stuck now. I got the major updates quickly and successfully yesterday. Now today, during a regular virus def update it appears to be stuck.

I have it set to update in invisible mode, so I can't exactly see what's going on now. It is set to update everyday at 12:00pm. The icon disappeared at 12:00pm and it is now 1:15pm. So 1 hour and 15 minutes so far.

I am somewhat new to AntiVir PE, so hopefully somebody more experienced with it can answer this question for me...

Am I still protected during this incredibly long update time?

3 hours now and still no AntiVir...

I am starting to lose faith in Avira very quickly now. I've only been using it for about 2-3 days now, pretty bad first impression.

I just received another daily vdf update. No problem here. You could start antivir's control center to see whether the guard is active.

I just decided to reboot the computer prior to reading your post. However, before rebooting I did notice that avguard.exe and sched.exe were running but avgnt.exe was not running.

When I checked the reports, it said that the update was successful just 2 minutes after the update started. So it must have been successful, but the tray icon (as well as avgnt.exe) did not come back. So it sounds as though this does not have to do with the recent slow server issue.

Is this a common issue for AntiVir, when the tray icon does not come back after updates?

All of this is pure crap. I have asked and gotten nothing. If there is a problem then someone from Avira just needs to say it because at least then people will understand. Avira, sit up and listen, tell these people, or should I say, your customers, what the hell is going on. You blew this one guys. It is called damage control. People only want communication, now, not after the frigging fact. We shall see.

i waited for a second update to see if the problem would re-occur, and it did..

start the control center and check whether the service is running, check your firewall settings(try deleting antivir related entries forcing the fw to relearn) as well since the binaries have changed and some firewalls will no longer apply the old rules (different md5) and may not display a notification message. also check the antivir logfiles for posible error messages.

it works fine here (3pro licenses, 1 Internet Security, and 1 Classic)

trjam: the freeware servers are at full load for a couple of days, as expected with such a major update. For the pre-update announcement and some explanations see http://forum.avira.de/thread.php?threadid=15813

On a general side note, I am a bit surprised about the local appearances of fanboyism resulting in either unquestioning love and mindless promotion of a product or hate with constant bashing and the need for a personal handwritten letter of excuse signed by each and every person who has ever worked on or recommended it. Folks, please take a minute and think about it. A discussion about AVs is not a thing that should resemble a soap opera with a cheesy unrequited love story. I am not trying to offend anyone here, just asking for a bit of self-reflection.

Jarmo, this is a quarter update. It is so big because you get updates for many binaries.
Usually, the signatures are below 20Kb (I don't have an official number).

i adjusted my firewall-rules (i an using the kerio 2.15 firewall) and then i no longer had a problem with the antivir updating process where "avgnt.exe" was not properly restarted..

I cannot understand why Avira, such an excellent application otherwise, cannot get the update, tray icon, and start up problems solved. They are not new, and the folks say that they are fixed, but even a cursory examination of the forums shows that "fixed they are not." ??? :'(

I have kept hoping that Avira would in fact fix the problems, but to no avail. For the next year or so I have settled on KAV6 and F-Secure, and will forget Avira at least until then.:(

Jerry

The AV guard issue occurs on ALL Win platforms. I just put a quick launch shortcut to the control panel avgctrl.exe to live with the problem.

I would NOT be too hasty in losing confidence in AntiVir/Avira over the tray icon issue; this is very good stuff, and I know that their code team is already working on a good fix for this issue. Every AV app has its own strange personality, and this is just one side of AntiVir's quarks.

I just wonder why you can't even access the website? After reading this thread, and being a former happy Antivir PE user, I just wanted to see what was also being said in the Antivir forum about any problems, and couldn't. I understand many people use Antivir, and this slows down the server, but what if I was checking their website thinking I may use it again if the problems aren't that bad? I think tthat by not even being able to get on the website it would tell me maybe I shouldn't.

I haven't been able to access their website for the last 45 minutes or so. My tray icon seems to disappear nearly every other update since the major update, so this update obviously sparked some kind of problem.

I just want to know if I'm still protected during these times that the tray icon is gone while that one process is not running...

I have also problems updating AntiVir Personal Edition Classic.

I've been now trying to use the automatic update and the manual update, but both have been failing for days.

The updater has all the rights to connect to the Internet, I can see in the logs that it is contacting various servers, but receives no updates.

I've also tried without a firewall, but no help.

My license is valid until May 2007, so it shouldn't be a problem of license either.

Weird.

The main reason why I upgraded to the Premium version. Server availabilty even with major upgrades is instantaneous, even on dial-up. Overall, I have never seen any problems with updates or tray icon here.

I am considering going to paid version as well, however I am able to receive updates on PE version but its a little hit and miss.

Sometime I get the 'can't connect to internet message' but I am sure this is just due to high volume use on the servers from the big update 2 days ago.

Hope things get back to normal soon.

Cheers
