question: what is the fastest resident scanner ? with good protection

For older computers the following are recommended;

Commercial programs;

1. F-Prot for Windows. Probably the most lightweight of the AV programs on system resources. Fast on-demand scanner.

2. Dr Web. Again very lightweight but may not be suitable for newbies as false positives may be a problem. However, I have only come across 4 in 13 months of use and those were easy to spot. Now the main scanner on my low spec boxes here. Slow on-demand scanner.

3. AVP 3.5. Swiss Kaspersky AV. Lighter on resources than the present version of KAV. Again a slow scanner on demand. Excellent detection against viruses and trojans.

4. NOD. Excellent ITW detection and a blindingly fast on demand scanner. Excellent support here at wilders.

5. Etrust EZ AV. Very light on system resources and cheap to buy and renew.

Overall on-demand scan speed seems to be related to unpacking abilities of the program. Fast speed means poor unpacking abilities. However, the new version of NOD is still very fast but has improved its unpacking considerably since version 1.

I have used all of these programs except Etrust EZ and any of them would offer you very good protection. However, you may consider an additional antitrojan program with F-prot, Etrust and NOD.

6. Etrust promo v7. Has 2 scan engines and a number of members here are very pleased with this program.

7,8. Both AVG and AntiVir are very lightweight on system resources.

If you can afford to, choose one of the commercial programs which have generally much faster updates and better detection rates.

However, try some of the above and see how they fit with your system. Do not install a new AV without either disabling your resident AV or uninstalling it.

Overall, virus detection, speed of updates and support would be better criteria to choose an AV rather than the speed of scanning.
