Serendipidous I found you guys a couple of days ago.

Had a lady friend and her kid over last nite. After they left, I used ie's drop down menu on the address bar. Like always it had the history of url's I had typed, but I was surprised to find 2 of the "sharing hand" icons I used to see at work when a directory or printer was shared with the network. Got a cold, clammy feeling. I updated and ran ad-aware, spybot S&D and x-cleaner; no new issues. I tested my zonealarm at shieldsup!. Still at 100%. Even looked at Start/Programs to see if anything new had been installed. Nothing.

I still don't have a warm fuzzy feeling about this. Yet, interrogating her her 15 yr old after their first evening over is not a palatable option either. So, please give me the answers to two questions. First, what a sharing hand icon means when it appears in ie's address bar? What other ways can I verify my box's security? FYI, I'm running XP with IE6 and I'm current on the latest patches and upgrades. In terms of computer literacy, I'm a step up from the average pc end user but can't even spell mcse.

Would appreciate the help.

-{ Quote: "First, what a sharing hand icon means when it appears in ie's address bar?" }-

I'm not sure what you are referring to. Can you attach a screen image of that part of IE? Did these lines show actual URLs besides those icons?

-{ Quote: "What other ways can I verify my box's security? " }-

You haven't mentioned what anti-virus program you use. The first thing I'd do is verify that it is still running and do a full scan. You could also try a couple of the online AV scans linked from our Free Services (http://www.wilders.org/free_services.htm) page. Those are a good second opinion for things like this.

Beyond that if you are still concerned, you could try posting a HijackThis log so the people here can review it to see if it shows and known malware.

-{ Quote: "Go to http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt and download "HijackThis!" (via button in the left section with flashing green light next to it). Unzip it. Run the HijackThis.exe file and press the [Scan] button... When the scan is finished, the [Scan] button will change into a [Save Log] button. Press that, save the log somewhere and paste the contents into a post here for us to look at.

Note that much of what will be listed there is correct and should not be fixed!! So, just post the output here and let's see if the people here can help identify the problem." }-

HijackThis is a tool that displays startup and configuration information from your system. It is a very good way to determine what malware is present and it also helps in fixing it.

I use norton as my av. I've run a full scan using it. Then I disabled it and ran a couple of scans using the online resources you suggested (thanks). No indication of infection.

Don't know how to make a screen image of IE's address bar. But I'll try to describe what's happening in more detail.

When I click the down arrow on the address bar I get a list. The individual lines are formatted in two parts. The first is an icon, usually IE's blue lower case "e", followed by a url. The effect resembles the below.

e http://www.wilders.org
e http://www.amazon.com
e http://65.54.246.250

Now imagine you want to share a resource, like a directory, in Windows 98. Typically one would right click on the item, then select properties, then share. The directory's icon would now appear as though it were resting atop a hand held with the palm facing up. That same "hand with the palm held up" now appears in my list of typed urls. The effect is similar to

e http://www.wilders.org
e http://www.amazon.com
e http://65.54.246.250
h
e http://movies.yahoo.com
e http://tv.yahoo.com
h
e http://www.shockwave.com

Hope this helps.

Hi bearspencer,

Please try this:
Star > Run > type or copy&paste msconfig > OK > on the Startups tab uncheck:
C:\Program Files\Live365\Start365\Start365.exe" -auto

Then reboot and let me know if that is the one.

If not try the same for:
C:\npdor\npdor.exe

Regards,

Pieter

Live365 is a 'net radio station and npor is for a distributed computing project.

thanks, though.

What can we try next?

I was aware of that. Did you check if neither of them was responsible for the sharing hand?

Pieter
