No. You can use a lot of software to make surfing safer. For example:

-Firewall : Outpost Pro (not free, 30 day trial, -> disable windows firewall before installing Outpost<-) : http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpost/index.php
-Browser : Firefox (free) : http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/
(after installation look for add-ons (also free) here ( Adblock, Tab mix plus and Noscript you can't really be without) https://addons.mozilla.org/?application=firefox )
-Anti-allsortsofstuff:
Spywareblaster (free): http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
Spywareguard (free) (don't use teatimer (spybot) when using this!) : http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html
Avg Anti-Spyware (free version available (only on-demand scan)) : http://www.ewido.net/en/
System safety monitor (free version : 2.0.8.583 ) : http://syssafety.com/default.html
Winpatrol (free version available) : http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html

You already know ad-aware and spybot. Both are free, but ad-aware also has a paid version. I wouldn't recommend buying that.

Yes one Hips might not be enough. What happens if you only have one and it's attacked or fails. So if you had another it could be keeping an eye on the first one. But what if that went down, maybe we need three or more to keep check on each other, just to be extra sure ?

How about adding a Sandbox/vitualization tools?

Free:
- Geswall (www.gentlesecurity.com)
- Sandboxie (www.sandboxie.com)

Paid:
- BufferZone (www.trustware.com)
- GreenBorder (www.greenborder.com)

Hello adamantell

If you want a simple, reasonably safe PC use your NOD 32, XP firewall and Sandboxie (http://www.sandboxie.com/)

For a free, very good firewall I suggest Comodo.

http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/

Instead of Spybot I use;
SUPERAntiSpyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/

and A-Squared.

For prevention/ defense purposes, i suggest Comodo Personal Firewall + a sandbox. Either GeSWall or Sandboxie, both free. Don't pay!
If you really want to check other stuff keep on reading posts here on wilders. A lot of people ask the same as you. Read first.

layering HIPS i would suggest to be a BAD idea since if you have multipul things hooking those functions it will become hectic and even BSOD you. I have seen this before and i would advise against layering HIPS softwares together

@ TECHWG

So less HIPS is better, makes sense thanks.
