Does anybody know of a good Outbound Application only firewall. I know there are several out there that offer the option to disable filtering, but this is not what I need. I am looking for one that strictly does nothing more than control outbound application access to the internet.

Thanks

Barney

If thats all you want, then just continue to use the Windows Firewall in the security center of SP2

Appdefend is what you you are looking for. It lets your control what applications may start and what applications may access the internet. Its very light on the resources and works well.

SSM and ProSecurity also offer outbound filtering, but AppDefend is simpler.

I was looking for the same thing and stumbled on Proxyfirewall.

Simple outbound app firewall. Runs at about 8-9mb of RAM on my machine so it's fairly light. I don't use the proxy features.

I thought the Windows firewall was only for inbound protection.

You are right, it is inbound filtering only. No outbound at all.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm using Jetico v.1 and believe it is one of the lightest and best firewalls there is. It checks both inbound and outbound connections and forces you to make a decision on each one: yea once, nay once, or set a rule. Thus, it qualifies as a solid outbound protector.

Or am I misreading this issue ??

I think the OP only wants something for outbound protection. Jetico does this well and it wouldn't hurt to have the extra layer of inbound protection that it offers.

I believe it can be easily configured to be minimally intrusive on inbound connections, as well: just put all inbounds in the "trusted" zone. I wouldn't do that without having another means of filtering inbounds, but apparently the OP has already taken care of that, so "trusted" should not be an issue of concern.

The OP just wants a simple outbound firewall with no bells and whistles. I assume he's behind a router or uses xp firewall or such.
