I run Seti@home at home ;) , you might as well put your CPU cycles towards something, whether its SETI or finding a cure for cancer or something like that.

I always wanted to ask somebody. Are there any security risks involved in this? I mean, if someone on the other end wanted to do something dishonest with your PC-personal information, could they?? ???

;) Suspicious when downloading? Rightly so...:
http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/faq.html#q1.6
"...What about security?
The client/screensaver is available for download only from this web page - we do not support SETI@home software obtained elsewhere. This software will upload and download data only from our data server here at Berkeley. The data server doesn't download any executable code to your computer..."

"...The so-called "SETI Hacker" hypothesis, Carrigan argues, is an issue of interstellar discourse that should be taken seriously..."
(I'll keep that in mind...but not for long...maybe a nanosecond.)

That project has stirred my curiosity. I'm going to go through the whole site and read it carefully. :)If it doesn't appear to get in the way of my other things I may use it...

I used to for over a year some years ago (I forget why I took it off) but now that you brought it to my attention again I went ahead and downloaded and installed it again! ;D
Thanks ;)

I use SETI@Home. Interesting looking screensaver and doesnt impose any noticable drag on the system. Only completed 7 units so far as I have only had it installed for a couple of weeks but intend staying with it. Shame to waste all those CPU cycles!!!!

Well it all sounds very admirable folks but I hate to think what Governments would do if they ever got an
"ANSWER"
And if a 'reply' was forthcoming from wherever would we ever be told???

1,018 units processed here since early 2002. Now I have it running on this box and my new test box when it's sitting idle.

"SETI@home is a scientific experiment that uses Internet-connected computers in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). You can participate by running a free program that downloads and analyzes radio telescope data..."
- That's all. No spyware. It's just what it says it is. :)
