I know others prefer Firestarter which is available through the repositories (although I'm pretty sure Guarddog is also available through the debian repos)... but firestarter isn't compatible with moblock (http://moblock.berlios.de/) (aka peerguardian --- but moblock is under current development whereas peerguardian is not for Linux. ;)) -- there is a viable work around I seem to remember reading on the ubuntu forums, but I haven't had the need to try to apply it as I prefer Guarddog.
I believe this is the thread which references the issue between Firestarter and moblock --- http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=192559&highlight=moblock

Hello,
How complex do you want your firewall to be?
Do you mind the command line?
Do you want a simple solution or something wicked?
Would you like to build your own router? All you need is an old P2 with a CD-ROM. And SmoothWall firewall.
As to the simplest dirtiest solution, it's a quick iptables script.
BTW, you don't need a firewall if you run xubuntu at its default setting. If you have no server-privilege software like apache, samba or such, you don't need a firewall. Ubuntu has no services that listen to the net.
