View Full Version : Thunderbird Inbox gone. Where to?

Hi,
I am trying NOD32 and last night got an alert that an incoming message contains a virus. I clicked on delete - not knowing that it would delete the entire inbox file and not only the virus.
After spending time on some forums I now know I did not activate "quarantine individual incoming messages".
So I trusted the technology too much. But now the important question:
Are my messages lost forever or are they in some file in quarantine? I can't find any hint on where to look or what to do. ???
Can someone point me in the right direction - or give me the bad news.
Thanks
//AndyBonn
PS: Just in case: TB 1.5.0.7, NOD 2.5, XPSP2

Hi Andi,
I can't remember last time I trialled Nod so Can't help with quarantine. However, you can check to see if the contents of your default profile (folder) is still there, check the following path,
C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\
If the folder is empty then, it looks like something or someone has deleted all the contents of your Profile folder, doubt it would be Nod but unsure, then you'll need a Nod user or one of the Mods to come in and help you.
Otherwise, if the folders aren't empty, (i.e there is a MAIL or IMAP folder etc) then I suggest you use the Thunderbird Profile Manager to set this folder (location) back to default.
Let us know how it goes.

NOD32 does not delete email files, there's only leave option available if a threat is found in an email file. The best would be to restore the file (e.g. using a delete recovery utility) and send it along with step-by-step instructions to support @ eset.com with a link to this thread.

Thanks for the help.
I tried the undelete and found no file called inbox or anything near the size.
There was one inbox, but that was the outlook copy and not the inbox proper from TBird.
I would not put my head on the block for this one, but I seem to remember clicking on delete.
Well, there are several indications that it was NOD deleting this:
- I didn't know about an option in TBird to ensure single message deletion. This seems to have happened before as progs are so centered around Outlook.
- no other new software was running.
- no indication of a deleted file.
So does this mean the file is lost? >:(
