View Full Version : Most cherished soft's ?

Hello guys and girls... :D

Hope everyone is doing good !

The first software that amazed me was ATGuard... One day I finally got the chance to come accross an old but complete version of it... I couldn't believe someone actually had had the idea and skills to build this multifunction firewall/filter... In fact, still use it on some configurations, firewall option disabled, just for the fun and nostalgia... but still functional on old OS's!

Another filter I loved very much and still do, i.e. WebWasher... While many people choose the excellent Proxo, I never could forget the powerful and complete simplicity of WW... Still taking care of my privacy to day.

Riding on an old W98SE bike, 98Lite (www.litepc.com) simply revolutionized my system, bringing stability, smoothness and quickness to it... Can't recall how I ever could do without it on W98SE.

Next revolution came when I understood the possibility and recognized the value of a good backup program... Completely changed my philosophy, because fears of any computer-related problems just disappeard overnight when I mastered the tools to create systematic and complete backup images of my system and files.

Good firewalls I couldn't do without, and OutPost Pro 2 in my eyes simply surpasses any other FW I have come across, even Kerio 2.14... At least I now have a FW which consistently survives the pcFlank's Exploits Test (www.pcflank.com), whatever the OS I use it on.

And of course, almost last but surely not least, Opera just has become a part of me on the web... Seems to me to be so fast and intelligent and reliable, always to be counted on, ever-evolving yet so perfect already... What a treat...

And now I can even use MwSnap to capture and share screenshots with the Wilders's members... A tool I now almost can't do without.

Ain't life great ?! :)

Over the last (more years than I care to remember) I have probably tried every antivirus program available for windows. But I keep coming back to mcafee. except for version 5 or 5.1 it has always worked well for me. I know there are people out there that don't like it but it has always kept my computer secure with the least amount of problems. I guess that is all you can expect. So I guess I will always use it as long as they don't screw it up. ;)

Well, I can't seem to fit mine into your poll choices, but it is without any doubt the single best and most powerful piece of security software I have ever seen... Tiny Trojan Trap.

I've written about it a few times here and other places including this large thread (http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=11871) that's packed with images and descriptions of its capabilities.

Like others have said above, for me nothing even comes close to TTT.

Thats a tuff one?? ???
Lovin "ZONE"
So many anti's hard to pick, eScan and tds-3 would get votes!
But I Always do, Put my best and worst pic's into "Webshots" also. The ease of working with it to show off in backgrouind or the three finger salute to change or start screen-saver, (also does link to site).
And all the "never-tech's",I always help out love it when I show it to them.

Althou, I do miss "GoBACK", and wish I could find a place to dl it again, or might have gotten off A Maximum PC disc but Bro to busy with 3D ("TrackWorks"), to look for it for me. Might have to just look myself next time I beat him home from work.
Lets see where is that yellow sticky pad????

Hi guys :)

Sorry to sound ridiculous, but what's this GoBack soft Acadia and Beetlejuice are talking about ? Kind of a rollback program as embedded in some OS's ?!

GoBack is System Restore on steroids. Whereas System Restore only restores certain parts of your system, GoBack restores literally every single sector of your hard drive to a previous state; yes, it’s that powerful. Use with caution if you are using a partitioning software, especially if you are doing dual booting.

Snagit32 has got to be the best little program I ever got, and that was years ago when it was still free. Especially for all those times when my sister just doesn't believe something I'm looking at, and then I snagit and show it to her. :D

Hmm, for me, I dont think any software has ever evoked that sense of awe and respect I seem to read in other posts

I guess if you must force me to pick it must be the first mozilla 1.0 versions?

Maybe POPfile for it's intelligent filtering?

But seriously none took my breath away or made me feel that it completely changed the nature of surfing or my computer experience.

For those to qualify it would mean stuff like discovering what a browser is after doing telnet only, or discovering POP3 when you have being webmail only...

There are so many great little apps, reliable and robust, that are simply worth their weight in gold. To make a decision, I'd have to pick an app that has done more than merely deliver 100% time and time again (like I said, there are a few). So I'd say it's my firewall, Outpost, because it has taught me so much - I'm still learning, too! ;D

I like Paint Shop Pro 7 a lot! It has many possibilities: such as to correct pictures, create drawings, animations and so on but then comes the time when you want stg bigger so you look at Maya "Alias" the complete or unlimited edition but the pricing is very high:

Maya Complete™ 5: $1999.00 USD
Maya Unlimited™ 5 $6999.00 USD :P

***************************************************
Another one I like, free and very light :):
Pixia, version 3:

I like it better than Paint Shop Pro when it's just for drawing with the mouse. My first drawing made with Pixia can be seen below...

A piece of software that I love is called RagTime Solo. It's freeware made in Germany and really does a bang-up job of desktop publishing. The program is so simple and intuitive that I find myself bypassing PageMaker (which I also have on my system) at least 99% of the time. RagTime is just a hell of a lot faster and easier. And it does just about everything I want done.

If programmer's tools are allowed in this thread, I want to mention a tool that is not cheap but to me worth every dollar:

1. CCleaner is so quiet. I always forget I have it. That's why I keep the icon on my desktop to remember it.
CCleaner was the very first solution for cleaning my cookies, the way I like it.
2. ZoneAlarm Free isn't so quiet as CCleaner, but I like it, because of its simplicity.
3. Thunderbird, because it requires only two clicks (open & close) to remove all my spam-emails in a few seconds.
4. Firefox with its brilliant Find-in-This-Page function, which I couldn't find in any other browser upto now.
5. IZArc for unzipping files and replacing winZIP and winRAR.
6. MS Excel 2000, an excellent spreadsheet.
7. ShadowUser, which I don't have yet, will be #1 on the list of my favorite softwares for many reasons.

The rest of the softwares, didn't impress me in anyway.

PocoMail - absolutely love it
Trillian - bought the pro version, and never regretted it
CallStation - absolutely awesome if you have a modem that supports caller id (the intel modem that comes with Dells does)
Everything Stardock makes
Acronis True Image
xplorer2 - also bought the paid version
StatBar - can't live without it
ProcessTamer - can't live without it
Miramar Continuous Data Protection - still beta, but really loving it

Actually my most cherished are:

Firefox browser - its really cool
Avast Home Antivirus - many jaw dropping features not found on other free AV
ProcessGuard - set it and forget it, only pop-ups when it really matters
Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta - has lots of real-time protection agents
Ewido - my goodness.. this was the only one that can detect spyware cookies
Diskeeper Lite - really can do the job fast and more through than windows built-in defragmenter
CleanCache 3.2 - cleans all of my internet tmp, cookies, MRU etc..
SpywareBlaster - immunize my system from some spywares

well that's all... I have many other softwares but the above impressed me most. 8)

Seven Favorites:

Macro Express I'm a keyboard person - use dozens of shortcuts and macros to input names, data, etc; launch programs to open with certain windows, all with hot keys; My most used program

Infoselect Second most used program - a type of PIM, displays in tree view

Scratchpad third most used program (no longer available) - simple text editor which acts as an appendable clipboard; option to use two colors for alternate entries, so multiple lists of data copied from the internet will alternate colors - easy to separate them

Paperport I do lots of scanning and the tree organization is first rate

metapad Great small (45k) replacement for notepad; supports hyperlinks; primary and secondary font setting (proportional and non-proportional)

gradekeeper wonderful low footprint simple grading program; indispensible

notecard freebie to teach the notes of the keyboard; I give to all of my beginning students - more fun than flashcards

Well, hmmm ... no browser, OS, security programs (only 2 anyway), as favorites - those are so boring. Once those are set up I forget about them - they just do their job.

I use my computer for work (small office) and fun (photography) and don't want to spend time with that other stuff. Except when I visit Wilders to keep informed.

Firefox, Incredibly configurable with all the extensions. Made all my Antispyware-programs obselete. No more ads.
FirsdefenceISR. Snapshot program. I love the way I can create 10 different configurations of my windows. Probably not for the average user since most wont need that many snapshots, but it gives me freedom to do whatever I want. Got even better when the option to save backups of the c partition on different drives came a couple of updates ago.
Totalcommander incredibly flexible filemanager.
NOD32 it does it job without hassle.
Processguard has given me peace of mind for the past year, but I think App- & Regdefend with it´s logging features and registry protection will be my choice from now on (still testing it)
Look´n´stop firewall. Ridiculous small footprint yet very powerfull. Love the way I can make rules from the logging window.

I love these kind of threads that gives info on good programs I never heard of :)

i like Ubuntu best, i've stopped using Windows since i installed it.

Proxomitron

VLC Media Player (www.videolan.org/vlc/) plays more formats then most.

regjumper (http://www.eolsoft.com/freeware/registry_jumper/) This tool allows you to open desired registry keys in Windows® Regedit by one click.

Opera with Power Buttons (http://nontroppo.org/wiki/PowerButtons) and Custom Buttons (http://nontroppo.org/wiki/CustomButtons). just drag the code to your toolbar after right-clicking and selecting Customize.

Pingplotter, smartsniff and ethereal - network tools

Dirms and Buzzsaw
www.dirms.com/

Screamer Radio (http://www.screamer-radio.com/) a radio with lots of preinstalled stations and one click record

PowerShell-XP3 adds stuff to explorer's right-click

Locate32 (http://www.uku.fi/~jmhuttun/english/softwares.shtml) most people that try it are amazed by it.

there's probably more but i can't remember them because Ubuntu beats them all put together so i've forgoten about them.

I voted in 2003, when this poll began, for GoBack. Since then I have replaced GB with FirstDefense-ISR, my new favorite. As much as I loved GB, FD blows GB out of the water with its flexibility, and unlike GB, you don't lose any history when you disable it. FD is almost like having GoBack and a Partitioning program in one. 8)

TrueLaunchBar (http://truelaunchbar.com/index.html)
Excellent, highly customizable replacement for quick launch bar. Take a look at the screens and check out plugins and features (http://truelaunchbar.com/features.html). Also got a christmas special $14.90 now. Most recent prog i bought. Did i say highly customizable ?? :)

Prassi ONES (http://shop.traxdata.fr/boutique/fiche_produit.cfm?type=ONES%20-%20Version%20de%20d%E9monstration%20(2.0)&ref=ONES2_DEMO&code_lg=lg_us)
My favourite burning app. Havent failed me once. Nonbloat 5,5 mb install. Review (http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Reviews/Specific.aspx?ArticleId=11098) and Videohelp.com comments (http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=Prassi_ONES)

Treesize Personal (http://www.jam-software.com/treesize/treesize_personal.shtml)
When jam-software (after request) created the personal version of their great Treesize Professional i bought immediately. A proggie that gives a excellent visualization of harddrive use. Great for finding those "lost Gb´s". I use it to track down my Gb´s of stuff ive forgotten about, "trash files" or just about anything.

Speed Commander (http://www.speedproject.de/enu/speedcommander/index.html)
Most people use Total Commander i think. I never got friends with that one but this instead. They are rather similar though. Anyway a nice file manager.

FastStone (http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm)
I put this image browser, editor etc here because not only do i really like it, but its also free, yay!

Magic Folder Now (http://www.elongsoft.com/magicfolder/magicfolder.htm)
This program lets you add favourite folders to context menu so with a right click i can quick jump into those folders. NOTE! This one works within "open files" / "save" etc so whenever your doing a "save as" and you realize you have to do a zillion clicks to jump into that folder you want, just right click and in MFN context menu folder(s) choose that folder. Check it out, saves my wrists bigtime!

Ghost Security Suite (http://www.ghostsecurity.com/)
Well everyone here already knows about this so no "review" needed. Love app/regdefend.

Jv16 Powertools 2005 (http://www.jv16.org/)
My favourite registry cleaner though it can do a bunch of other stuff too. Has great überclean interface. Jouni (maker of jv16) is a friendly, good guy and takes suggestions seriously.

Movie Collector (Collectorz) (http://www.collectorz.com/movie/)
Very nice movie database program that can autoupdate reviews, actor info, and all a bunch of other info straight from imdb, amazon and more. Really give s a nice overview of your films, along with those reviews and clickable front and back covers. Check it out instead, specially "features" at program site.

Mine is the DNSKong (http://www.pyrenean.com/?page_value=-1) program; a caching/filtering local DNS server software. If anyone wants to, see the DNSKong - a personal caching/filtering psuedo-DNS server (http://castlecops.com/postp529007.html) thread that I opened on CastleCops forums (my nick is "satyr")

The others might be Proxomitron (http://castlecops.com/Proxomitron.html) proxy software, the K9 (http://www.keir.net/k9.html) anti-spamming software and finally the most secure Off By One (http://www.OffByOne.com) web browser.

/EDIT: For descriptions and download links, see my profile at CastleCops: userinfo-satyr.html (http://castlecops.com/userinfo-satyr.html) and look below under "Last 10 Downloads Submitted by satyr:"

Additionally alse see these other topics below, related to programs mentioned above; Keir's K9 program; an only 81 KB in-size anti-spam program (http://castlecops.com/p684991-Keirs_K9_program_an_only_81_KB_in_size_anti_spam_program.html), The most secure browser - Off By One web browser ... (http://castlecops.com/p546692-The_most_secure_browser_Off_By_One_web_browser.html), Review: DNSKong program (https://www.readyresponse.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1815) ), while here are also links to two articles on Wikipedia that I've created or participated in editing (my nick is "Wayfarer"): DNSKong (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DNSKong), OffByOne (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OffByOne)
