View Full Version : Slow page loading?

Cochise

Is it just me or are the pages very slow. Browsing from one Wilders page to another can take up to fourteen seconds! Yet at the bottom of the page it says 'Page created in .396 secs. or 1.499' or thereabouts.

But in reality it is much slower.

I'm not whining, just wondering if it's my OS.

I was on during this time and did not see any trouble. It's been good for the last 6 hours while I've been on.

I often see slowdowns like that where it is the network path from my ISP to the forums. It slows the request I make for a page, or the delivery of the page to me. But, be sure there are also times when things do slow down here, but those times are fairly rare now a days.

Note that the "page creation" time on the bottom of every page is what the server sees from its perspective in "generating" the page. It may be off if any slowdown occurs on the actual network delivery of the page to you. (Well, and actually because of a whole bunch of other factors. ::) )

Hi LWM,

Thanks for that, actually, to-day, the pages are loading at about the stated speed.

I must have had a bit of a hang up somewhere.

Hope you didn't mind the query.

Cheers, Cochise. 8) :-[

;D Cochise, read topic "Wilders SLOW!!!!!!!!!" pages 5 and 6. I think that will explain it. ;D

Yes, the site used to have some serious slowdown issues very frequently back then. Since that time we've moved to better hardware and upgraded to a better (faster) version of the board software.

There were times when the average page load was 15-20 seconds quite frequently. Now, it's rare to get pages that take more than a couple seconds. (Just look at some of the bad times in the thread referenced. :o )

It's so much better now! :) :)

However, this does not mean we don't want to hear about problems or slowdowns. Sometimes there will be server or network problems that will cause major performance impacts, and it's better to have people report them than not. Sometimes you'll find the slowdown is on your end (ISP, connection, whatever) but even then it's good to know where the problem is rather than just ignoring it.

So, feel free to report these kinds of problems here.

;D LWM, it was a joke. See:
http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=7030;start=60

Especially the part about the (1.21 gigawatts) ;D.

LowWaterMark

Yes, I know - I wrote that part. ;D

But, in seriousness my reply above was actually for the sake of the times when there will be real slowdowns here. They can and do still occur from time to time. I wanted everyone to know that they should feel free to post about any that they experience so we can address them.

It is real slow this morning. Around 4KB/sec for me on my ISDN line.

Indeed. For the last two days, this site has been slow as molasses in January. Something is wrong.
I have no problems on other websites.

Indeed, i've had to stop pages from loading in last 2 days as it was taking too much time. Only applies here at wilders

Hmm, perhaps it was bad luck even talking about the forum speed. ::)

Can you all explain the characteristics of what you are seeing? "Slow" comes in many forms. Is it not even starting to load a page for many seconds when you first hit a Wilders link? Does the page form right away, but takes a very long time to fill in? Is it just the images coming down that is slow? What does the page creation time at the bottom of each page look like? (eg. "Page created in 0.452 seconds.")

More details may help us to identify the type of problem.

<-QUOTE}

It takes 5 to 6 seconds after you click a link before the page actually starts to build. In Opera the page even goes blank for a while.
After that it's pretty normal. Page creation between .4 and 1.6 seconds.

I just wanted to add that I have a cable modem and I usually get lightning fast downloads, but right now I'm trying to read people's postings and it's taking longer than I think it should.

We have restarted apache and mysql on the server now; hopefully this will solve the problem.

Feed back from those suffering from the problem earlier on is much appreciated!

I've been noticing the problem myself here for the last week or so. Just assumed it was going to clear itself up, but it hasn't.

Here, it gets the top of the page pretty quickly, and the first few replies, but after that, the loading icon just keeps spinning and spinning, and it takes a minute or more for the entire page (with all posts on that page) to load.

Any kind of a check I can run from this end?

I say - dreadfully slow loading times. To get from a forum to the main index was just 2+minutes and timed out. Right now UTC London = 1750.

This is an intermittent problem. this time index page loads almost right away. 1803.

Hi.

I'm having the same problems that Spy1 described.
Last night I did the speed tweak for Firebird and that helped a little.

The two days prior to that page loading was worse, extremely slow.
Change of browser doesn't help.
I have tried Opera 7.21 and Beonex in addition to Firebird 0.7.
Pages are loading better today, but not as good as last week.

Hello. I just wanted to say whatever you did to speed up the load times is working. I posted a reply to this thread a while back commenting on the slowness and when I visited the forum today I noticed a huge improvement. Way to go!!! Now all I ask for is TDS 4 and WG 4 to be released. I know that you probably get tired of hearing this, but an approximate release date would be nice.

P.S.
I love your software.
