Had limited experience with Vaios` in my previous line of work. Did sub-contracted in home warranty repair work. They were generally pretty solid PC`s. First thoughts that come to mind are corrupted restore disks or the beginning of hardware\ hard drive failure. leaning toward HDD failure :-\ Is it still covered by warranty?

Hi ThunderZ,
Warranty finished last year,All the programs installed except for windows. When installing the 4 disks i never received an error message, Do you know if windows is on the forth disk, and do you know what the black screen means.I've used a copy of windows xp from a friend.

Would think windows is on the first disk (never really thought about it or checked into it) as it would need to be installed prior to all other programs. But, I`m a little confused, you say you have restore disks, then you say you used a friends. Most\all PC`s are branded now. Meaning the software on the restore disk(s) is tied to the hardware configuration by a string of "code" written to hdd.

After installing the last disk ( number 4 ) It tells you to click on finish, after clicking on finish it re-boots and you have windows normaly, but all i get is a black screen.I thought windows had not installed because i got a black screen,That is why i tried a friends copy of windows. If I try again and get the black screen is there anything i can do.

Are you doing this as a fresh install (f/disk) or over the top of a previous install?

This is a fresh install,When you insert the first disk it tells you that everything will be removed from your computer, and it will be restored to factory settings.

Ok, I still need an answer about your friends disk. Did you at one time install it. This sounds like it may be a branding issue. If you did an install from another disk it sounds like the "string" I mentioned is gone so now the restore disks may not work. You could do a search on Sony Vaio branding. It will probably help you out more then anything I can tell you.

It means windows is failing to load. Could be for one of the reasons already mentioned or a number of others. One other thing you could try, if you know the manufacturer of the hdd go to their website. There should be a utility you can download that will make either a bootable floppy or CD that when booted from and will wipe your hdd to all zeros. Then you can try your restore disks one more time. After that I`m at a lose without being there.

If you are talking about a hardware\mechanical failure then other then the warranty (if it is still covered) most options are expensive with no guarantees of success. If you are talking about a software\operating system crash then there are several options.
