Hello,

We have had A (sweet) list of Windows programs.

Now, it's time for A (cool) list of Linux tools. It's a compilation of useful applications for Linux, including rescue, recovery, diagnostics, live cds, and other utilities. Many programs listed under the Windows programs are open-source and cross-platform and will also run on Linux, so the two lists are a good combo.

Again, feedback would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Mrk

Edit: Added Links ;)

Here's a screenshot of IE 5.0 running in Linux, which is bizarre yet extremely cool.

Hello,
I knew you would chime in.
Always nice to hear from Mr. Linux!
Mrk

P.S. I'm off to start checking the apps.

-{ Quote: "P.S. I'm off to start checking the apps." }-I added all the links now. :)

There are so many great apps available, I've only gotten around to looking at about maybe 10% of what's out there. It's nice when everything is free in both senses, and your only costs are donations of time and money for the apps you wish to support. -{ Quote: " I knew you would chime in." }- It's impossible to keep your mouth shut when you've fallen in love. You want to shout it from the rooftops 8)

Ps. I forgot a few others.

Streamtuner (http://www.nongnu.org/streamtuner/) Radio Streams Directory - Shoutcast - Live365 and a few others. Works well with xmms (which is why I like xmms and have it installed) Amarok is also capable of playing streams and has some listed in the playlist section, but the Streamtuner/xmms combo works much better.

Kaffeine (http://kaffeine.sourceforge.net/) is a great video player too. Able to Capture segments of video, screenshots etc. ... DVB etc.

And how could I forget K3B (http://www.k3b.org/) for all your CD/DVD writing needs (it's a nice package, like earlier editions of Nero.)

Nice list Mrk. However I am wondering if you are including apps that run in wine as counting for running in linux? Because if you are not, K-Meleon is windows only unfortunately :'(

---edit---- (I trimmed it down as requested ;D )
Here is an awesome firewall for the dedicated firewalls section:

pfsense (http://www.pfsense.com/) (freebsd with openbsd's pf)

netbsd's pkgsrc (http://www.netbsd.org/Documentation/software/packages.html):
a great package management system that will work on pretty much all *nix systems for all those distro's who don't have a good package management system built in(cough cough slackware cough cough)

Sylpheed (http://sylpheed.sraoss.jp/en/) is also a very nice and lightweight mail reader

ROX-Filer (http://rox.sourceforge.net/phpwiki/index.php/ROX-Filer) is a wicked fast file manager as well

SELinux (http://www.nsa.gov/selinux/): is a hardened linux kernel that can implement numerous security policies.

openbox (http://icculus.org/openbox/) to replace metacity in the gnome desktop environment for a much lighter and quicker visual experience. Run openbox --replace to make this work.

Great list, and I may think of more (cool) tools later.

Keep up the good work

Bastille (http://www.bastille-linux.org/) -- provides basic *nix hardening

Aide (http://sourceforge.net/projects/aide) -- (Advanced Intrusion Detection Environment) In the same vein as Tripwire, but completely free and goes beyond tripwire.

Hello,

Will be included in the update, but just to let everyone know:

The virus that destroys the Partition Table - TestDisk utility can recover deleted or damaged Partition Tables, including NTFS systems - and is included on Knoppix live CD as well as GParted live CD, as well as some others.

http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk

One more reason why Linux is cool and why Linux is leet and why Linux is cool.

If you have a pc issue - first thing check what Linux has to say.
