View Full Version : Resident Shield deactivates itself

I occasionally open AVG Anti-Spyware and discover that the resident shield is inactive. Since it is never the case that I have intentionally deactivated it, what might be causing this to happen?

Full/Trial? Do you have a file called "logfile.txt" and/or "error.txt" in the program dir? Thanks! ;)

It's trial.

When I turned on my computer this morning, it was deactivated again. This time (unlike previous times) the tray icon is grey.

I have a logfile.txt, and its complete contents are, as follows:

synchronize database and filecache
RegQueryValueyEx failed, Value: 000000EA
synchronize database and filecache
synchronize database and filecache
Timer deletion failed, Value: 000003E5

I just joined the Forum because of the same problem with my trial version.

It happens frequently to me. The only thing is that I am using the Windows screensaver which I never used to let activate.

My logfile only has an s in it;
s

Nothing else!

I check for updates daily.

I am running the AVG full AntiVirus and Firewall.

Any suggestions would be appreciate.

Thanks.

Hmmm. No answer to this problem? A protective application that turns itself off without warning from time to time isn't very good and certainly not worth purchasing. I'm glad that I didn't pay for it without giving it a trial run first.

Please understand that questions are easy - it's the answers that take time, research and checking.

I want an answer for this as much as anyone but I want an answer I can rely on.

Sometimes, it is not easy to replicate the problem becaue it might be a misconfiguration with our computers or our installation of the package.

But, I still want the answer yesterday - just that I realise that desire is unrealistic and complaints at this point are unreasonable.

could it be that your trials have expired ?

Mine has 21 days to go.

Wonder if all the downtime will be added on to the end (I'm only joking!).

I have fourteen days left on my trial. When I turned my computer on this morning the resident shield was deactivated, so I manually turned it on. Then I turned off my computer, turned it back on again, and this time AVG Anti-Spyware loaded with the resident shield active. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. Not good at all.

My computer is usually left on and Ewido seems to deactivate itself.

I've got a lot going on, so I am not sure if there is some event that might be linked to it turning off but it is of great concern since Ewido has such a good reputation and I'm very happy with the AVG anti-virus and firewall.

I can't leave this program on my machine for much longer if it isn't reliable.

Have patience. The AVG folks apparently don't consider unreliability to be a priority problem. My AVG Anti-Spyware hasn't turned itself off for almost a day now. :P

Well, my patience just ran out. I turned on my computer this morning and found that AVG Anti-Spyware started up with its resident shield deactivated again. I don't see much sense in finishing the trial period, much less purchasing the product, since it is clearly defective and no support is offered here to address the problem. I began this trial with high hopes, but there are many alternatives. ~removed un-necessary non ewido support remark....Bubba~

I was trialing Ewido 4 a little over a month ago and the resident shield deactivates itself. Since the expiry of the trial period, I am now trialling AVG AS for the 5th day and last night the resident shield did not start along with the other services.
I thought this issue was resolved with this AVG version?

It clearly hasn't been resolved. And the support staff here seem unable to say anything about it, much less do anything about it. I've switched to ST.

The problem is, that no one of us was abled to reproduce it so far. We changed things where we thought that it maybe could be the reason for this, but it seems that we've failed. :(

However we still don't know how to enforce that problem, and as long we cannot enforce it we can not know what is the reason for this bug :(

We're really sorry for this inconvenience.

Thanks for finally getting back to us to this deactification problem, because it is a serious issue for anyone who happens to experience it. However, if you cannot reproduce the problem for yourselves, I can understand how it would be very hard to determine what might be causing it. In my experience, it seems to be deactivated only (occasionally) at startup (of the computer). That is, it doesn't suddenly deactivate itself during a computer session. It may involve some kind of conflict with some other startup item . . .

Yes, there's an error event in System branch:
"The ewido anti-spyware 4.0 guard service failed to start due to the following error:
Access is denied."

My account type is admin.
This happened after uninstalling Ewido 4.0 and installing AVG Anti-Spyware. When I changed back to Ewido 4.0, this issue is still present.

Perhaps that will provide a clue for the ewido techs.

You might also try disabling the "Indexing Service" in your system services...reboot...and see if it permits the guard service to startup.

START>RUN and type in services.msc

I too have experienced the self deactivation of resident shield. My computer is on 24/7 and I notice it has deactivated after my screen goes dark from inactivity. More times than not, it has deactivated when I resume activity.

Is this a regional thing? I'm in Las Vegas, NV and not very computer hip.

Thanks for any help.

If so, a pretty large region. San Francisco Bay Area here.

I had this problem too , but something else bothers me
After starting Windows , I do not have the Ewido icon in the sys tray , although
I have its processes in the Task Manager.
I just run it manualy , and after closing the prog. , the icon shows in the sys tray.

I too have had these same problems. I installed trial Ewido 4 night before last which I had downloaded on another computer a few weeks back. But most curious, the bubble just now popped up from the task bar and said Ewido was just updated. The Logo was grayed out. I opened it and the Resident Shield is inactive. So an update turns it off? This is NOT very good/safe.:(

Ialso notice while I was browsing these forums last night that it had turned itself off.

With this issue I don't know if want to update to AVG 7, let alone pay for it.

WindowsXP SP2,ZoneAlarm free, Spybot S&D.

..........I have the last version of Ewido , paid subscription. I created a new user guest account the other day and another account for a family member. I noticed on both these accounts when logged in that the resident shield is deactivated. However when switching back to my account all is well. Any suggestions?

Monday Oct 22nd I called the 800 # because I haven't recieved the CD I ordered with the ewido protection. (Money was taken out of my bank on the 9th of Oct.) I also wanted a license # that I can enter to continue the service after the 1 month trial period, which I never received.

I got a rather nasty e-mail in return that they were AGAIN sending the CD and suggested I print out a copy of the mail. Duh.

While reading the mail, the resident shield once again deactivated.

There is no help at ewido's FAQ, tech support, or here in this forum. Maybe it's time to take my money elsewhere.

I coming to the end of my trial period.

As this problem seems to be un-reproducable, I can understand that a fix is impossible.

But that doesn't give me any comfortable level of protection, so I also will have to look for an alternative while restarting the trial whenever I notice that it has deactivated.

I will revisit the Forum before changing in the hope that there's some breakthrough because I'm impressed with the paid Grisoft AVG Antivirus and firewall. I'll recommend that in my next book about making web-sites, due to be published in December.

But, there's no way I can buy this product or recommend it if it doesn't work for me.

BTW I don't think there's anything regional about this - I'm in Australia and have never heard of any regional problem that causes something like this.

Als, I'm not getting notifications of thread replies either

My situation has been resolved. I was sent my ID # no less that 4 times (I only asked for it twice), and my CD twice in as many days. I have continued with my service and since the paid subscription kicked in, the Resident Shield has remained active.

I will return the 2nd CD.

I upgraded my AVG Anti-virus and Firewall to the new version with the Anti-Spyware in it.

Some features only work with the latest version of the various Windows operating systems.

I still need to get clarification of how to check some things are actually working.

The the program says everything is (even the stuff I have to upgrade the operating system for, apparently!).

I will get in touch with support but this was not a comfortable time.

I will run another anti-spyware just in case.

With the one file attachment limit, I'll have to spread this over two posts. Not only have I experienced the problem with the Resident Shield spontaneously closing (although it happened much more often with the previous Ewido version, and less with the new AVG version), but I've experienced an even more confusing problem.

The program will show the icon 'lit', and when I right-click on it, the menu list has the checkmark next to 'Resident Shield'. But when I go to the main program window, the Status tab shows the Resident Shield as Inactive.

I've attached screenshots to demonstrate this. This first one is of the Status tab - - it shows the 'Inactive' Status reported, but the icon 'lit'. Please see the following message for more.

Rosenkavalier
November 9th, 2006, 08:04 PM
Following up to the previous message, in this screenshot, the Shield stab shows the Resident Shield status as Active. I can switch back and forth between these tabs, and get these different status results reported.

Based on these problems, I'm not expecting to license the software when the trial period expires.

Edit: One more note - - when I'm having this problem, if I 'toggle' the status of the Resident Shield, the color of the 'Active' text on the Shield tab goes from red to green.

Yep, but only in the trial. Once you enter a license code, it will work without problems. Luckily, we finally found the cause and have fixed it already internally. We are currently working on some other improvements (mainly faster update process) and expect the new version to be released within 1-2 weeks.

So the problem I outlined above (icon is 'lit', status is actually inactive, different tabs report different status) definitely goes away when a license code is entered? I'd like to be sure of this before I make up my mind on a final purchase (9 days left on trial). Thanks for replying to the thread.

I can´t agree. I have the paided version running and I get the information, the Resident Shield is active, but the icon in the taskbar is not shown. In addition, Ewido will not update itself, but I get the information the update should be downloaded automatically.

I did de-install Ewido, delete the folder and was using CCleaner and RegSeeker to clean the registry. The re-installation of Ewido goes very well and the first step, Ewido did update itself by going thru the setup. But now, I have to update manually...

What´s wrong with Ewido?
The event-log doesn´t show anything related to Ewido. And the service is starting automatically.
WXP_Pro_SP2 fully patched, NOD32, Sygate and Windows-Defender are running.

DevilFrank,

Right click on the ewido icon in the systray and see if "Start with Windows" is check marked. Your problem sounds something like ewido is not starting up on reboot.

I recommend that you update to the latest version of AVG 7.5 Anti-Spyware (V7.5.0.50 plus). It has several enhancements and bug fixes in it over the old ewido named version that you have.

Yeah Like Silicon said it is highly recommended to switch to AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5.50 since there are several bugs fixed. Also some bugfixes regarding the Resident Shield.

Hi siliconman01,

many thanks. Your tip did help. I did not expect that Ewido did not start with Windows but the service was started (WXP_services).

Hi Vinzenz
Is the switch essential or recommended. I have a axiom: Never stop a running system...

Hi
What's the point if the resident shield in trial version does not work. It's during that trial period you decide whether you'd want to pay for it. I had similar issues for a month with no resolution and I was not going to pay for something which does not work for the trial period but apparantly would for the paid version...their was no guarantee from what I've read from the post above :-)
Anyway, I've since trialed Superantispyware for a month and now paid for 3 lifetime licence too.

The HDD on my new computer failed in some way, so I took it back to the manufactures service and repair office, They informed that the HDD was corrupted ..?
And they could back up some files but not all. And had to reload the OS (Windows XP Pro Media Edition)
They managed to keep my AVG Anti-Spyware Version 7.5.0.50 (Paid)

When I reloaded the AVG Anti-Spyware program and entered my serial key number, then I installed the up dates, every thing worked fine until I noticed that the Resident Shield was shown as
inactive….

I then clicked the change state sign on the resident Shield, and then a notice with a large red cross came on screen and in the sign box it said Error …. Failed to Activate Resident Shield

Can any one please advise how I can get the resident Shield to work..?

Thanks……. Mypenry

Having looked at the registry entries fror Ewido & Grisoft it seems like the Ewido coders have gone to great lengths to make it difficult for a crack to be developed so that the 30 day trial version does not expire???

This could explain the problems?

Also malware writers could be targeting this app.
That would meen that the consider it a serious threat.
Which would imply that it is a very good program that they want to sabotage.

Then again I could be talking utter BS! :)

I have an Ewido reg entry that changes at each boot???
Shouldnt even be there as I have updateed to AVGAS???
Need to do some more research...
