Same question was asked not that long ago. A couple of paid fors were mentioned priced at around $40 and $100. But sorry, no mentions of any freeware.

The thing with PDF is that it was meant for displaying stuff, not editing it. To get it to a word document, the best thing I could suggest is printing it, then scanning it into your computer and going from their. Also, the problem with the Word document is that it is a closed format that Microsoft hasn't released, so many formatting issues occur since no-one knows the true inner workings of the formate. That is why everyone should either use latex or open document format ;D

Cheers,

I use PDF Converter (http://www.jsware.net/jsware/pdfconv.php3) - nothing fancy, just extracts the text and saves it in a .txt file.

PDF Converter Pro 4.0 has significantly improved conversion features.

There are specual deals until 30 Sep 2006 at, as I recall, http://www.nuance.com/pdf4/.

Yes
Bit of a pain changing the PDF format back to editable/word formats.
Not as easy as it sounds.
Editing/revising PDF can be a nuisance.

I looked for a good free conversion utility a while ago: not many about.
Tried Paperless printer and didn't like it: cant actually remember why.

I get a lot of scannedPDF docs and PDF docs e-mailed to me and often want to work on them with other text utilities for rediting. Not sure why they get sent as PDF so often: I think there is a mistaken assumption that PDF docs are somehow more secure and unique identifying characteristics cant be changed.

I ended up going for this: http://www.investintech.com/prod_a2d_pro.htm
Actually works well for me but did cost a bit. Very accurate conversion: not perfect but the best of what I tested, particularly for the annoying "scanned and attached" PDF files.

HTH

Just saw Ice's post with link: that should will work but often will lose formatting. Scanner OCR technology is much better these days but also can be a pain resorting the formatting
