It is one of the free AVs and is good.
Others are
Antivir( probably best- at least to some)
AVG

Sorry my mistake.
Just do an advanced search on the forum with "Avast", search for thread Titles only.

I'm using it, and have been using for a quite long time, I'm very happy with its results. If you have any questions about avast! Antivirus, just get to its support forum and try to use "Search" to find out what you want to know or start a new thread if it needed.

If you're looking for well balanced, non intrusive antivirus, avast! is the one.
If you're looking for raw detection force, then AntiVir is the answer.
If you need very easy AV for some very old machine AVG is probably the best option.

well if you dont mind paying antivir premium £13 A year then you get spyware and adware detection and you can make it so it just does it jobs and doesnt prompt you

I have used avast in the past but it always seemed a little more hungrier on the resources compared to antivir or avg. However on a decent machine its probably not a concern.
To the poster above (lodore) exactly how good is antivir's spyware/adware detection? Would it be good enough to not need a dedicated spyware program?

Avast home is free for home users. Antivir also comes in a free version for home users. However people can pay to upgrade to antivir premium which has spyware/adware detection as well as virus detection.

Yes, avast! Home (freeware) detects all malware (viruses, worms, trojans, adware, spyware, riskware, etc.) that avast! Pro (shareware) detects but I think you'll have better protection with a dedicated antispyware using along with avast! or other antivirus. I personally don't use any antispyware, I have only avast! Home (with Windows Firewall) on my machine as a security software.

Nah you shouldn't have any problems with those specs, i ran avast on a machine with much lower specs. Heck you can run whatever you want with those specs. Try the program out and see how you like it, if you don't like it there are plenty of alternatives such as AVG, Antivir or even etrust antivirus (which normally isn't free but you can get a free 12 month license from microsofts website). Good luck!
