View Full Version : Tired of Nero-Burning - Alternatives?
Tommy

Because i don't need all the functions of blown up software on my Laptop (first Photoshop was killed), Nero Burning is going to fall. I need some suggestions regarding small alternatives. I heard about Prasi Ones, Sateira, etc. Any suggestions from your experinces folks?

I tested that one, seams to be good, but - don't ask me why - i don't like it. I think i don't like these 'What would you like to do' Dialogs.

You mentioned Sateira. I use their DropToCD. It burns DVDs, ISOs, bootable media & more. 10x less system resources than Nero. And the whole program is 1.5MB vs 125+MB for Nero. ;D

I don't think so.
But it supports BURNProof. Also you can use burning simulation.
Also the features considering its size & lack of system impact are incredible. From the site.

Ones and Sateira are indeed two nice programs.
- ONES is very impressive; to the interface from ONES one has to get used to.
- I like Sateira, but it does not support verify cds/dvds after burning, thats bad.

For databurning in ONES what do you use from your experience for closed CD's? SAT Mode 2 closed or TAO Mode 2 closed?
And for Multisessions?

I'm moving onto Roxio Media Creator 9 (hoping to get my hands on the OEM version when it's out) simply because I need a software that is user friendly for the whole family. ONES is light and driverless, but IMO more suited to advanced users (that's me out).

I burn data cds & movies if that's what you are asking. I normally would use track-at-once mode 2 closed for burning. I've done quite a few cds with session-at-once but I never added more stuff to the first session. I hope I've answered your questions.

Session-at-Once is a subset of Disc-at-Once, used for CD Extra. In Session-at-Once recording, a first session containing multiple audio tracks is recorded in a single pass, then the laser is turned off, but the disc is not closed. Then a second (data) session is written and closed.

For Music burning I use Apple iTune, and for datas...sorry but I still uses Nero. ;D ;) It's hard for me to replace Nero, it looks elegant, cool and very reliable...and aside from that, it's made in Germany. So it has a German quality engineering. 8)

In simple words it goes via Mode->Build (Build Image) and burn. You have the option to save the image and burn it later, or 'Burn on the fly' directly to the CD/DVD.

Check out BurnAtOnce (http://burnatonce.com/), an Open Source burner. Very compact. Burns music, data, image files. I've burned several Linux and BSD versions with it. Also copies from one CD to another and reads to image. Will also burn DVDs when used with ProDVD. The interface isn't fancy but it works good. Don't be fooled by its small size.

Seams that i have to look at it again ::)
So i have to make a decisions between:
1. Prasi Ones
2. Image Burn
3. burnatonce
I don't want to use several burn software. Could result in conflict in case of Multisessions. Seams that Nr. 2 and 3 cover all, up to music burning and that for free (well some donation).
I hate to make this kind of decisions :). I like all three of them.

- First the GUI and Handling of those two are totaly different. CDB has a Explorer GUI, IB something like Burnatonce
- Both don't support for now _no_ Multisession.
- IMGBurn is build of the idea to burn everything via Images. So also if you only want to burn _one_ file, IB builds first internal an image and burns it than on the fly. The possibilities of fine tuning are endless in IB.
- CDB is simple and does what it has to do without big adjustment possibilities.
- IB is far more advanced i think and reacher of adjustments.
- IB can verify burnings, CDB i don't know.

I'm not a fan of Nero Suite either. Too many functions I don't need and the trial Nero Premium failed already one time writing an .iso-file on CD, which is a simple task.
So I'm going to use freewares for awhile until I know exactly what I need regarding CD's and DVD's.
An all-in-one software isn't a good choice IMO and my readings confirm it.

I can't give you a good answer yet, because my computer is brand new and burning CD/DVD's isn't my priority #1 yet. I had more urgent problems in the beginning.
But I have already 3 softwares in mind :
CDBurnerXP Pro

to replace an older version of Nero, that was delivered with my new BenQ CD/DVD-writer. Nero Premium failed, but the older version of Nero v6.6.1.4 didn't fail yet. Right now I hardly burn CD's, but that will change in the future.

Too bad Nero Express 6 is not somehow available. I know it's not small but IMO, it offers perhaps the best overall options of anything mentioned so far. Choosing between 3 isn't so bad. How about making it 4?
Before I found BurnAtOnce, I was trying Fireburner. (http://www.fireburner.com/index.php?page=4) I was using version 1.06 at the time. Has a fully functional trial period. Incredibly small file, 446kb zip file! Until I tried it, I thought it was a corrupted download, too small, or so I thought. Haven't tried the newer version, but 1.06 is unzip and go. Interface is a bit strange, could be better, but it burned everything I asked of it. Would have bought it had I not found BAO. Give it a look. It redefines compact software.

hi all
If you are looking for a simple and easy to use and with perfect options for burning and creating images then i would suggest you Alcohol 120. Well dont forget that you want to just burn images but you need to know how to create images and how to create bootable images. If you are using xp you already have Roxio in it to burn images to copy files and burn in it and which is very easy for grandma to follow instructions through the wizard and burn the files, folers, audios, videos, and images.
The nero 7 premium does have few bugs and you can check with nero to see what version of it works best. The alternative for nero would be Alcohol which is really worth the money coz it has options of emulations and creating a virtual CD/DVD drive which you can load your images in case if you have a problem with your CD/DVD drives...you can go to the link and discover and download the trial version to try.
HERE IS A SIMPLE INDRODUCTION OF ALCOHOL AND WHAT IT HAS IN IT
What is Alcohol?
Alcohol brings a new meaning to the word multimedia! It is without a doubt a leader in it's class, bringing the ability to emulate and record CDs and DVDs together into one amazingly easy to use software program.
Using the latest technology the program is constantly being developed and improved to add new features, allowing it to maintain it's position as a leading software package.
Imagine being able to store your most used CDs as images on your computer and just call them up at the click of a button! And then run them at 200x the speed of some CD drives and without requiring the CD itself! How about being able to make a backup of that CD onto another CD either using the CD itself or just using the image you have created? This is what Alcohol allows you to do and much more.
Alcohol 120% enables you to make a duplicate back-up to recordable media of nearly all your expensive Game/Software/DVD titles, and/or an image that can be mounted and run from any one of Alcohol's virtual drives.
No other software available enables you to create up to a staggering 31 virtual drives, allowing you to run your game images at over 200x faster than from a conventional CD-ROM. Alcohol 120% is a powerful utility that uses a unique combination of options to ensure a perfect back-up every time.
All you need is a PC combined with a CD or a DVD burner. No more replacing your expensive original discs due to loss, theft, scratches, or other media imperfections. Your duplicate works just like the original; your entire collection can be archived and your investment protected.
In the home: Have you had experiences with the common conditions of CDs/DVDs? They can easily get scratched, damaged, broken, lost or even stolen. Alcohol provides you with peace of mind and protects your investment.
Your original games/program discs can be safely stored away. Alcohol-created images mean that you always have your expensive media stored safely on your hard drive for instant retrieval at the click of a button. No more searching for the correct game disc or software application install disc, everything is at your fingertips.
You can now, for instance, simultaneously play your favourite game and bring up your route planner without having to eject and reload any physical discs, The 31 virtual drive ability of Alcohol means you can have the equivalent of a staggering 31 CD-ROM drives in your Home PC, all instantly accessible. You can simply and quickly run your Disc image at around 200 times faster than that of a conventional CD-ROM drive. If you need a program or CD it is immediately there - always ready to use!
At the office: Program discs and many other applications generally require the original disc to be in the computer's CD-ROM drive. This restricts the amount of people in your office who can have access to the same software at the same time without the cost of additional discs. Alcohol's virtual drives resolve that problem for you. No more hunting around the offices for that elusive disc you need to run your application, everything you require is just a click away.
With Alcohol you can store your CD images on your office server, your colleagues and employees at their respective networked workstations will never need to come asking for a CD again, they will not even require an expensive CD-ROM drive installed in their workstation PC! A simple click is all that is required for them to have full access to any disc image they require for their day to day work. Your valuable CDs can be safely kept under lock and key.
Does your company have a promotional CD for it's customers? Original pressed discs are expensive, using the Alcohol 120% writing engine you can copy the original to inexpensive blank discs for distribution to your customers and keep your overheads down.
Alcohol software offers unrivalled usage to people from all walks of life regardless of if you are a hardened game player, busy school teacher, salesman, IT manager, student etc. Alcohol has a niche in all your everyday computer needs. Let Alcohol help you to help yourselves and give you the peace of mind you deserve when it comes to expensive PC media.
Do not have a CD/DVD writer? No problem, Alcohol 52%* is the answer, with all the power and technological advantages of Alcohol 120%. Alcohol 52% is ideally suited for Laptop use (no need to take your expensive discs along to a meeting where they can become misplaced). Ideal for school/office environments where access to an image file by workstation users would be an advantage.
Do not just take our word for it! Download our free 30 day trial version of Alcohol 120% or Alcohol 52% and see for yourself. (There are no restrictions in the software other than a limitation to 6 virtual drives instead of 31 in both Alcohol 52% and 120%. Also the ability to write to only two drives at the same time as opposed to 8 or more writers in Alcohol 120%). Our policy is try before you buy.
We are convinced once you have seen the power of our software combined with free updates and email support, backed up with an extensive Support Forum you will not be disappointed.
To download it you can go to http://trial.alcohol-soft.com/en/alcohol_info.php

Prassi ONES is excellent, just like the older Prassi which I truly missed, have dumped NERO for bloat and switched to this one for good now, best of all, works equally well on my 965 motherboard with the pesky 3rd party J Micron IDE controller on XP64, most are having problems with Nero when J Micron is there.
