Hi, folk: I am assisting a friend to install new antivirus app. She wants to choose between AVG and Antivir, both are paidwares. I have no extensive experience w/ these two. Can some viewers help me out w/ your advice? Thanks.

First your question. Of the 2. I'd choose Antivir.
But really if a friend or relative was looking at those 2 AVs. And absolutely insisted on paying for an AV. I'd recommend NOD32 or KAV.
But if they wanted to go the free AV route. I'd recommend in this order. First AOL Active Virus Shield (~KAV lite), second Avast! home & third Antivir classic.

If the lady in question is using XP then id choose antivir. If shes using an older operating system like 98 or me then id choose AVG.

I have just started trialing Antivir Workstation. It runs well, updates often, and loads quickly. Of the two mentioned, I would choose Avira by a wide margin.
Why not trial each and see what she likes. If she is inclined, trial also KAV and NOD. Any of the three would provide superb protection. So far I have not had Avira long enough to get a good feel for it, but so far, so good.
Best,
Jerry

Hi Lodore,
I don't knnow how much the workstation is. I am using it because I could not see how to get a 30 day trial for the Premium. I understand they are the same except the workstation can be operated remotely. I may not understand the difference, but if I recall correctly that is the difference. Maybe someone can elaborate on the differences, but I would purchase the Premium.
Avira has a good price at about $25.50 for a years subscription. There isn't a price break for renewal I don't think.
At that price I like it, so far, well enough to buy it. I would probably prefer KAV today, but not at almost twice the price for no better protection.
Best,
Jerry

wait on the suite, the price isnt set yet but, for ultimate protection, it will beat the rest I am sure.

Hi trjam,
Is there a beta suite out, and have you tried it?
Thanks,
Jerry

trjam,
Any ideas when the suite will be out of beta? I'm using the antivirus/firewall beta, and so far I'm happy with it. The beta key is only good until October 31, 2006. That's not a big problem, since I have a one year license for AntiVir Premium. I'm just curious as to when the suite will be out of beta.

Their is currently the firewall and AV with antispam in testing. I have a strong feeling more will be added but not at the expense of speed or CPU consumption. They are being very careful about this. As for the license, don’t worry too much about it. I think they will have a final product at or close to that time, and then, Happy Holidays, to the rest.

Yesterday, Updated my Win98fe backup system to the latest Update of AntiVir Classic (free).
The anomolies that were reported by some users of Win98/ME (BSOD's by some, just GPF's for me) since Build 163 have been completely resolved by Build 180. AntiVir provides excellent protection without taxing this legacy system at all (love it on WinXP as well).
I allow the Notifier PROMO PopUp on my rarely connected Win98 System and noticed an offer to "save € 5.50 on a three year paid subscription",
(did not click for details).

Antivir is supposed to have better detection rates but if a person was a safe surfer then avg would be fine, heck you may as well just use the free version as its basically the same as the full version with only minor differences.

Between these two,
The choice is clear,
Only one way to go,
And that's AntiVir!
I went to college for four years (plus a couple of professional certifications) so that I could create prose such as that! I'm 46, and my parents are still pissed! ;)
