I'm going to do this the hard way and simply write in the details - this board's table s/w is too hard to maintain. *So, can anyone add any categories of Things Which Must Be Controlled to this fledgling features comparison chart, please? *Thank you.

Well slap me silly and call me wilbur, checkout had a good idea! And who said he was too busy marauding as a ZA commando over at GRC?

Now there are some hard decisions to be made by you checkout (since this is your idea):

Which AT and AV, and FW are going to get the smily face when there are so many different opinions? You might want to go with ZA while I would choose TPF/KPF, and others would chose L n S,NIS, Sygate, or Outpost. AT, AV and FW seem to be the most debated categories with no clear winner. (well NOD32 is pretty close to a clear winner, but these NAV people keep piping up).

Is this going to be decided by the number of votes? Do two uneducated votes beat on educated vote? Do people sign up 20 times to vote for there favorite AT? Do we need to take a serious look at doing our own testing of all these products with large amounts of malware?

I love the chart idea, but that smilie face may be a tad biased one way or the other.

" }- Something like this will be very helpful to alot of people (like me :-/), to sort out what protection/support they have and not end up getting alot of conflict programs or missing something you need...I for one would print it out and have it hanging next to my computer.. ;)

Great idea Checkout, but again, I have to agree that without some voting system, this could be a *tad* biased.

My suggestion would be that some sort of voting system would be implemented (where everyone could only vote ONCE of course *:)). And by publicizing the link to the voting system various places online, you could get a lot of votes, and, thus, a fairly good representation of preferences (AND it would also help remove people's accusations that you set the "preferred" programs based on your own preferences - and I don't see how that could be a bad thing *;)).

This is a great idea. *I would be very interested in seeing a feature comparison between products as well as hearing other users opionions on how well they work. *

There you'll find my reviews to junkbuster, naviscope, adsubtract and webwasher for instance.

what you just mentioned there about the programs being configured propertly is so true.....and it can take several weeks through trail and error just learning hot to use a program with the default settings, meanwhile, the average home user is vulnerable to attacks and loss of privacy.....with everything i've read about lately, it doesn't give the user much time to learn something so important.

i have yet to really have the chance to learn what my XP can do (fun wise) since i've been spending the time to secure it the best way i can in the shortest time possible (moreso now with BDE stalking the net for its victims)........ :-[

when i saw your post with the graph of security software and it's compatibility & comparisons to each programs function i thought WOW...that's what i need to know!! *Thank you for starting this!

i am not sure exactly what the final outcome will be, but i know it will definitely save me some time researching some areas.

is it possible to list ....ummm...(makes wish list up)
compatibility with the security programs to the unsecurity programs??? *Or, would it help better if people could list what they use and what they would like to secure (in some kind of graph-type list)?

the reason i am asking is with one program i had looked at, not sure what it was now i'm losing track of them ~l~, but it said it blocked port 80.....i don't know my ports yet that well....but i do know i don't want anything stopping my icq from working.

Ooops...ok, that was not a small post....

but since i'm posting again... :)....i am at a total loss as to learning about proxys...i've tried...(still don't understand that winscript/calc test)...but i am no computer technician....and inbetween learning my paint programs, i do get carried away with the passion to learn this side of the internet...the security....and it is an incredible passion to learn and know and share it. :)

but i'm failing big time with the browser vulnerabilities.
i keep changing the security settings in IE6 and end up constantly clicking on yes or no with each java/script popup......and that in itself is dangerous, because my daughter is starting to just "click the yes" too automatically.........ease of use vs. no use....i dunno.
