Hi

I appreciate that Sysrep is a Microsoft utility but hope I can get some clarification here before I use it.

I have two notebook PCs, both running XP. I would like to backup my main computer and clone it to the second so that, ideally, I can start up the second PC and continue working where I left off on the first. Each is using different hardware.

I see in the True Image FAQ that I need to run sysrep to prepare the main computer by removing all SID info before creating the image.

1. If I run sysrep on the main computer but then continue to use it, will it still be able to connect to the networks, shares & domain that it's connected to now? Will the removal of SID info mean that it won't be recognised as the same computer?

2. If I backup and restore to the second computer but then run both computers simultaneously will there be a conflict?

3. Are there limitations to what True Image will do? In a perfect world I'd expect to see the same users, software, settings, customisations etc. on the second computer after the restore as I'm used to seeing on the main computer. Am I being unrealistic? :-\

Any advice or suggestions gratefully received :)

I have my doubts that what you propose would work in practice. You would soon run into a problem with authentication as you would have one licensed copy of XP on two different computers. There could also be further problems as the hardware on the two machines is not identical.

In your circumstances I would buy an extra hard drive for your No.1 computer. I would then save a whole image of its current drive to the No.2 computer. Then take out No.1's drive and replace it with the new drive and restore the image from computer No.2.

So you will now have effectively three computers! Number 1 will be running from its new drive and you will have its old drive ( a perfect clone!) as a replacement.
Number 2 computer can be used at the same time with no conflicts and will it still have its own copy of XP loaded .
