ZA has excellent firewall but it lacks of good AV and AS .
ZA suit has IM protection , this is nonsense , every product you have will protect your computer which includes the Instant messages , this IM protection is ZA is just a marketing stuff.
If you need to choose between Kaspersky and ZoneAlarm , I would recommend you Kaspersky , because it has much better AV/AS and overall protection than ZoneAlarm's suite . You can buy Kaspersky AV and use the free ZA firewall or buy Kaspersky IS instead
You can also have a look at other products such as NOD32 (http://www.eset.com) , which are excellent , too :) ;D :)

As for the parental control , hmmm ,this is difficult , especially when there are teenagers . Please read these :

Use Microsoft Shared Access tool

well an antivirus can catch malware sent through IM, but ZA's imsecure lets u encrypt your chat/im, turn off links, block spammers, etc.

As parental control i would definately take k9 webprotection (website: www.k9webprotection.com) , the best webfilter available (and it's free)

If someone insists on IM secure, isn,t it available as a standalone product as well?
